Yes, I did start it and we meet once a month in my 'bar' and I cannot imagine life being any better - friends, wine, snacks, chocolate and talking about books!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Mr Govangirl says it's his idea of Hell

Yes, I loved it, too!! I think the subject is fascinating!
& I have a copy of Angels & Demons waiting to be read, that my dad passed on to me. I may just have to read that one after The Red Tent...

  Sounds very familiar!! Altho Mr. Lass   loves to read he, too, would rather have teeth extracted than plan an evening around the discussion of them. Little does he understand the makings of a women's (which is all they usually consist of!) book club & their meetings

& this reminds me of a highly entertaining movie about just this subject......Jane Austin's Book Club .....have you seen it?! I imagine you have but if not, rent it! I liked it a lot!!

One last thing...I was just going thru my books (looking for The Christmas Box recommended by Govangirl) & have to recommend to everyone, Six of One by Rita Mae Brown. It's one of my all time favorites, very funny!! & if you like it you'll probably also like her books Southern Discomfort, Rubyfruit Jungle & High Hearts, all VERY good.
I have to say, I read the 1st couple in her Sneaky Pie Brown series & altho the writing is good as always, I just can't get into the whole "cat detective" thing.
(side note...the author happens to live nearby & many of her stories' backdrops are right here & in surrounding Virginia areas, which makes them especially interesting to me. I believe she moved here just after I finished Six of One (many years ago) & she came in my place of business!! I was actually star struck :D )

I think my little trip to Ikea on Monday may have to include another bookcase after receiving the books the postman brought on Monday 8) These last few months have been fantastic and very social but oh how I am looking forward to two whole weekends in and catching up with some reading before the next lot of social activities begin and the next lot of visitors arrive!! (Not complaining - honest!!)
From my "parcel" I have started with "BuddhaDa" by Anne Donovan which is our next bookgroup title. The synopsis says it is "An endearing humorous yet unsentimental story of a working class Glaswegian man who discovers Buddhism, rejects old habits and seeks a life far more meaningful...only to alienate his immediate family in the process!!"
It looks like it will be a poignant read but I am enjoying what I have read so far and there have been a few chuckles!! It's written in "Glaswegian" so may take a bit more concentration from the non Scots among us :D

The book sounds good, Ags. I am interested in Buddhism but I'm not sure I have the patience  to read a whole book written in Glaswegian?!
happy reading :)

That sounds brilliant, Ags. I will have to put that on my Santa list.

I finished reading Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men with my Year 11s today and they were quite affected by the ending. They were quiet for ages after the last word - 'Silence is the perfectest herald of joy: I were but little happy, if I could say how much.' (Shakespeare) We had a wonderful discussion about it and their enthusiasm cheered me up no end. :D

Anyone got the new book out today 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard' by J K Rowling? My daughter and I read one of the tales tonight - really lovely! One of them has a brilliant title: 'Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump'. I just love it!

Maybe, altho I can't think of any book to movie where the movie was actually better?! Wow, if you ever do rent the dvd I'll be very curious to know what you think!! I didn't read the book (& probably won't) so I can't compare, but I did enjoy the movie.

Hated Jane Austin Lossitlass - showed mum The Red Tent - thought she would despise the idea but she is getting it for Christmas too!! :D
The Glaswegian buddhist is good - i am more than half way through and i'm sure you could cope!! It will at least prepare you for your next trip to Machrihanish.....Govangirl - if santa doesn't bring it to you - I will get my copy in the post!!
The Christmas Box came yesterday so its next on the list x

The only one that springs to mind is Captain Correllis mandolin - I found the book quite heavy going but loved the film - oh and Chocolat.......but then maybe Johnny Depp had something to do with that
