I have just finished The Gathering by Anne Enwright. Oh dear. How the heck did this ever win the Booker? Started off promisingly but...................

A Rumor of War by Philip Caputo

I finished this book a while back but thought it worth mentioning. Some reviews said that as a depiction of war it ranks alongside "All Quiet on the Western front" but A Rumor of War is not a novel it is a memoir.

When the U.S. involvement escalated in the early 1960s and combat units were deployed beginning in 1965 Caputo, a marine lieutenant was sent to Danang. He was in combat for sixteen months before being sent home. He returned in 1975 as a reporter and was there when Saigon fell to the Vietcong.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read it again sometime in the future.

Just finished Silent Witness by Richard North Patterson, and have started Plum Island by Nelson DeMille.

I have John Connolly's latest in the Charlie Parker series, The Reapers, put by for reading on the flight to the sun in three weeks.

Holidays over :( but great to see this thread is still busy and that there's a seperate one for the bookclub! Well done everybody! It was amazing how many people (when I was doing my "what are they reading" nosey) in Spain were reading Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns!!
Thought I was going to have to agree with you on Shadow of the wind Govangirl but once I got to about a quarter of the way through it I really really enjoyed it! Saw the prequel too Wee toon Ajax but my spanish doesn't quite stretch enough to reading a book in the language!! I also read The boy in the striped pyjamas in one sitting and thought it was absolutely fantastic! The story is told from the perspective of a nine year old and the innocence and the ending just made me cry bucket loads into my sangria!! Fantastic book!!

Did you expect that ending, Ags? A lot of people I know said they knew it was going to happen but I had no idea and it really shocked me. I'm off on Friday on holiday to the States and I see that the film is going to be shown on the flight. My friend says she's going to be mortified if I start wailing which I think just might be possible. :(

No I didn't see it coming at all ......!! I assumed it wouldn't be a happy ending but was surprised/shocked!! I spoke so much about it I ended up reading the end of it to mini Ags who is loving her world war 2 project at school! Wee pet got me a packet of kleenex before I started!! Not quite sure whether she is old enough to read it all herself yet? Look forward to hearing what you think of the film and what extent of mortification you land on your pal

Read Kite Runner and half of Thousand Splendid Suns last night. Woke up just there after dreaming about Afghanistan all night. Also had this in my head. Don't know what it means or what it's about, was just going through my head. Happens a lot actually, but it's rare that I can remember it. As usual, I don't know if it's any use or not, but I wouldn't expect a follow up anytime soon, I'm too bloody lazy

He awoke and struggled to the bathroom mirror. It seemed the sink moved beneath him, but as he struggled with the sleep in his eyes, he saw that the porcelain was in fact reptant with ants. Blinking his eyes into proper focus, he watched them for a while, and wondered what their purpose was in his sink. Did he leave something there overnight? What are they looking for? These questions came suddenly, but they were not pondered over for long. All interest in the ant's plight gone, he turned on the taps, drowning some, while crushing the others who were out of reach of the spray. It was then that he caught his reflection. Brushing away his sleep matted hair, he stared blankly at the dull ovals that were staring back at him. He remembered when they were bright and green. He kept staring, wondering when the dull, lifeless things in front of him had lost their shine.

Just finished.... "A good day to die" by Simon Kernick...if you like fast paced thrillers he is very good! A lot of people I know slag "Richard and Judy's book club" but Simon Kernick is an author who was featured on there that I had never heard of before. That is the fourth book of his that I have read and enjoyed.

Just started......"The white tiger" by Aravind Adiga recent booker winner and not a book I would have seen myself read. It came highly recommended by a friend who read it in a few days and although it is a bit dark in places it has had me laugh out loud in others.
