The Day That Thatcher Dies

We will laugh the day that Thatcher dies,
Even though we know it's not right,
We will dance and sing all night.

I was blind in 1979, by '82 I had clues,
By 1986 I was mad as hell.

The teachers at school, they took us for fools,
They never taught us what to do,
But Christ we were strong, we knew all along,
We taught ourselves the right from wrong.

And the punk rock kids, and the techno kids,
No, it's not their fault.
And the hip hop boys and heavy metal girls,
No, it's not their fault.

It was love, but Tories don't know what that means,
She was Michelle Cox from the lower stream,
She wore high-heeled shoes while the rest wore flat soles.

And the playground taught her how to be cruel,
I talked politics and she called me a fool,
She wrapped her ankle chain round my left wing heart.

Ding dong, the witch is dead, which old witch?
The wicked witch.
Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead.
Welcome...
Back to the circus...

A great quote on telly last night.

Apparently its going to cost £3 mill for maggies state funeral.
Why not buy everyone in Scotland a spade with the £3 mill and we'll start digging a hole all the way down to lucifer himself to ensure shes handed over to the right man

You don't need to buy me a spade, I'll buy it myself. Just show me the way to the digging spot!

When it came to filling in the hole, it would be an idea to dump in all the Sheriff Officers who managed to make a very nice living out of her changes to local government taxation. That was one industry she did create.

I wonder how many people now own houses because of her? :?

I wonder how many people now own shares because of her? :?

I can't help but feel the demographic unemployment that happened during the 80's was going to happen one-way-or-the-other, she just happened to be at the helm at the time.

Nothing wrong with people owning their own homes, especially those who had paid council rents for years, problem was that the money that was raised from the sales was not ploughed back into replenishing the council house stock. Now generations later are left with substandard council houses to rent and those wanting to buy their first homes are borrowing way beyond their means. At the end of the day houses are for living in and not to fund your retirement, houses should be affordable, something which is not happening in UK.

Not as many as you think. Worked for a stockbrokers for years including handling of many of the building societies converting to banks and can tell you that over 80% of the shares given to the former members were sold within the first 6 months. Many of the sell offs of public institutions have resulted in poor utilities - eg the rail network, water utilities, electricity - all of which are an absolute mess today. Got to ask where the money for those went - maybe tax cuts for those better off in the first place.

There is no doubt there would have been unemployment and a lot of the former heavy industry would have died out due to cheaper foreign competition but Thatcher deliberately set out to destroy those she saw as a threat to her - miners, Scots (remember where poll tax was introduced first), amongst others. She and her ministers were responsible for the breakdown of many communities acrosee the nation.

She created a society where the self was more important that anything else - leading to the state the UK is now in - where people in general dont give 2 hoots about their neighbour, where people no longer willing to work and save for things but expect to have them straight away leading to massive increase in debt esp credit cards etc. No other country in Europe is going to be in the same mess as the UK is heading as they at least still had some principles.

Will not celebrate her death but at same time will not shed any tears for her.
If, after all, men cannot always make history have meaning, they can always act so that their own lives have one.

I wonder how many people DON'T own houses because of her?

And my parents were perfect examples of people who bought their houses and shouldn't have.

How many people do you know Sheik who own shares? And if they do, are they worth anything?

WTA - Surely this was not her fault, but the fault of the local authorities who received the income, and squandered the money ridiculously in the 30 years since she took power?

WTA - Thatcher brought share ownership to the masses, whether those individuals wanted to cash in after 20 days or 20 years is part of human nature. All that I'm saying is that far more people now own shares than did 20 years ago.
Equally many previously state run monopolies (European) are doing well e.g. especially telco's such as Deutsche Telecom, KPN, France Telecom, Swisscom. Most are trading many times above their initial offer price. Re: "where did the money from those go?" To be honest I don't care, I just know that I can now choose from 6 suppliers as to who supplies my energy/phone/etc and shop around for the best price or service I want, something previously denied us. I don't think you'd see many people voting to go back. There are some services where I believe mistakes were made, eg. Water and Rail Network, but these seem to now be being rectified.
Wee Toon Ajax wrote:remember where poll tax was introduced first.
Another thread entirely! Are there any taxes which are liked? This ultimately lead to her downfall, and her hatred within Scotland, but I think if you can disassociate yourself from the term Poll Tax and all the associated baggage, then it wasn't any more ridiculous a concept as Domestic Rates, Local Income Tax, Council Tax, etc.
Wee Toon Ajax wrote:No other country in Europe is going to be in the same mess as the UK is heading as they at least still had some principles.
She did preside over a deregulation of the credit/finance industry, and this has fuelled a great amount of growth in the UK. I think we'll wait and see how the UK rides out the current worldwide downturn, before mourning it's sinking into the North Atlantic. I don't believe we're alone in our troubles?
Govangirl wrote:I've only got 2 words to say to you on this and that's SHIP BUILDING!!!!!.

Govangirl - I love you too  but do you honestly think that we could go on building ships to the same quality and price of the Koreans, Chinese, Poles, and Japanese. No we couldn't! The global economy saw to that, not Margaret Thatcher. That's when the market died, we were too complacent, we lived on our reputation, our yards were guaranteed work, the quality therfore wasn't good enough, and there was little competition. The competition learned, caught up, and passed British shipbuilding a long time ago. Why do the Germans, with labour costs greater than UK, STILL win more orders and build more ships than us? Purely and simply because the quality is better. Was Thatcher responsible for all the other countries simply building better boats, cheaper?

I worked in the newspaper industry, which she's also being accused of decemating, and if there was any industry which was run and controlled by unions then this surely was it. Other than the "jobs for life" brigade, most people in that industry were desperate for change. My belief is that many daily newspapers would not be around today had it not been for her addressing the union stranglehold on this industry.

PS. I'll see your 3 Margaritas, and I'll raise you 2 bottles of wine
