WTA - Surely this was not her fault, but the fault of the local authorities who received the income, and squandered the money ridiculously in the 30 years since she took power?
Wee Toon Ajax wrote:Not as many as you think. Worked for a stockbrokers for years including handling of many of the building societies converting to banks and can tell you that over 80% of the shares given to the former members were sold within the first 6 months. Many of the sell offs of public institutions have resulted in poor utilities - eg the rail network, water utilities, electricity - all of which are an absolute mess today. Got to ask where the money for those went - maybe tax cuts for those better off in the first place.
WTA - Thatcher brought share ownership to the masses, whether those individuals wanted to cash in after 20 days or 20 years is part of human nature. All that I'm saying is that far more people now own shares than did 20 years ago.
Equally many previously state run monopolies (European) are doing well e.g. especially telco's such as Deutsche Telecom, KPN, France Telecom, Swisscom. Most are trading many times above their initial offer price. Re: "where did the money from those go?" To be honest I don't care, I just know that I can now choose from 6 suppliers as to who supplies my energy/phone/etc and shop around for the best price or service I want, something previously denied us. I don't think you'd see many people voting to go back. There are some services where I believe mistakes were made, eg. Water and Rail Network, but these seem to now be being rectified.

Another thread entirely! Are there any taxes which are liked? This ultimately lead to her downfall, and her hatred within Scotland, but I think if you can disassociate yourself from the term Poll Tax and all the associated baggage, then it wasn't any more ridiculous a concept as Domestic Rates, Local Income Tax, Council Tax, etc.

She did preside over a deregulation of the credit/finance industry, and this has fuelled a great amount of growth in the UK. I think we'll wait and see how the UK rides out the current worldwide downturn, before mourning it's sinking into the North Atlantic. I don't believe we're alone in our troubles?

Govangirl - I love you too

but do you honestly think that we could go on building ships to the same quality and price of the Koreans, Chinese, Poles, and Japanese. No we couldn't! The global economy saw to that, not Margaret Thatcher. That's when the market died, we were too complacent, we lived on our reputation, our yards were guaranteed work, the quality therfore wasn't good enough, and there was little competition. The competition learned, caught up, and passed British shipbuilding a long time ago. Why do the Germans, with labour costs greater than UK, STILL win more orders and build more ships than us? Purely and simply because the quality is better. Was Thatcher responsible for all the other countries simply building better boats, cheaper?
I worked in the newspaper industry, which she's also being accused of decemating, and if there was any industry which was run and controlled by unions then this surely was it. Other than the "jobs for life" brigade, most people in that industry were desperate for change. My belief is that many daily newspapers would not be around today had it not been for her addressing the union stranglehold on this industry.
PS. I'll see your 3 Margaritas, and I'll raise you 2 bottles of wine
