Members of this Forum, from previous discussions on political matters, know of my admiration for Baroness Thatcher.

Not only was she one of the best ever Prime Ministers, but she is also a truly Great Briton.

She did create polarised opinions, people either loved her or loathed her.

Emdee,I also think a lot depends on which side of the border you bide.

Throughout the world she is revered for the great stateswoman that she is.

I live hundreds of miles from the border and have never met a Thatcher admirer yet!

They didn't all have her as Prime Minister.

My goodness, there is going to be some feeding frenzy when she dies.

All the young, cool, ultra trendy, right on journalists and writers piling right in there. Many of them not even born when she was PM, many of them hardly even knowing what she looks like, having absolutely NO IDEA what they are talking about. But they will be oh so keen to join in so that they can, supposedly boost their own popularity.

I would imagine Bill will receive ill informed, childish and vindictive personal abuse for stating his view but he most certainly is not alone in that opinion. Just that most will be too scared to put it forward.

No, because after losing their jobs and their houses, they all fled!!!!!!

Well, I don't see any abuse. Bill is entitled to his opinion and I have to say I'm in awe of a Scot who admires the woman! And I mean that honestly!!!

There are a whole lot more crimes she committed than snatching the milk! Anyone else out there who were in fear of losing their property when mortgage rates rose to 15%? That's right, you youngsters, 15%!!!!!!!!!!!!

For some reason people seem to be mellowing towards her over time.
She was an evil woman who ripped apart communities decimated industry.
I'm in a conservative constituency 20 miles from where she grew up and
I don't know anyone locally who has respect for her grudging or not.
Welcome...

I met her once. I was surprised how small she was, especially surrounded by her very large bodyguards :o

Although I didn't agree with many of her policies, I can't help having a sneaking admiration for her and the way she stuck to her guns.

Her tenacity and self-belief were her greatest personal attributes, but these, coupled with her inability to listen to others ended up being a liability culminating in her downfall when her own party realised she was past her sell-by date.

Tramp The Dirt Down by Elvis Costello

I saw a newspaper picture from the political
campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously
in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child's lips
Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
long enough to savour
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't
haunted by every tiny detail
'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say that it all ends
the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just
squeezed the life from his only son
And how it's only voices in your head and
dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between
justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful
discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up
for punishment
And then expect you to say "Thank you"
straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you
haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
filled up with dreams then poured down
the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being
blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord
your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms
and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life
could be so cheap
'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the
dirt down

Some thoughts on the issue from the Hidden Glasgow discussion..

I wonder how she will be portrayed in future history lessons?
