Quintin Family from Southend, Kintyre

Postby Neil Campbell » Mon Jun 15, 2020 7:05 pm

Hello folks

My paternal Great Grandfather was a James Quintin born Southend 2nd July 1851. He married in Port Ellen, Islay a Catherine Calder on 25th June 1886. His father was a James Quintin also who was married to a Mary McIsaac. They were married in Southend 7th June 1828.

I have an advert from the Campbeltown Courier of 6th January 1883 listing James Jnr as a House Carpenter, Joiner and Cartwright and operating from Mr Andrew's Land, 68 Longrow. It would have been sometime after this that he moved to Islay.

I am keen to find any detail on the Quintin family in Kintyre. I have good detail on James Jnr's own children but no other detail on his family history beyond the above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated together with pointers to any other sources of information locally.

Many thanks

Neil (Quintin) Campbell

Hi Neil… A belated welcome to the Kintyre Forum.
Sorry for the site’s inactivity. Reading down, just noticed your post.

The first thing that springs to mind is his employment at 'Mister Andrew.'
The term ‘land’ in Campbeltown is/was the building’s owner. Andrew, (obviously a family name) probably rented out a commercial ground-floor property for him to conduct his business. If this was the case, then he must have been listed as tax-payer etc.
My Grandmother Mary MacArthur, lived at 53 Longrow, just opposite her brother who had the Macarthur bakery. (not far from your family..., lol..., I remember as a child, renting bicycles from somewhere near) Note the difference in spelling with their names, while her father was a McArthur. (3 different ways of spelling) The McArthurs had generations of butchers and my Grandmother’s cousin had a butcher’s shop on the same pavement, not far from the road leading left to Springbank. (whisky) Andrew’s Land would have been just opposite.
