Just posting something about Gallowhill made me think...

Does anyone have any history on Gallowhill?

You might as well be hung for a sh..... No that is too predictable..... Although I thought Gallowhill was named because it was the site of hangings, apparently it wasn't... If I remember correctly it is a corruption of the gaelic word for whin bushes, but I cant remember where I read this... If anyone else has any better info on this it would be handy.
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you!

Pete, I never wanted to say because I'm an outsider, but thats the same thing I heard.. only one person was hanged but he was doing a sheep.
Some people die at 21 but aren't buried until they are 65.

Apparently the guy was from Tangy way and he was hanged at Millknowe ' then his body was burnt at the same spot...had a write up on it somewhere. His name was what would now be called Mac Alisdair.I think "they" were more annoyed that the "deed" was done on a Sunday.......

I have an old Kintyre map where it appears that Gallowhill is called Whin Hill. The gaelic word for whin/gorse is Conasg, however I can't find any mention of this word in any old maps.

My dad used to call the hill behind Dalintober school as ''The Broo'' I suppose that meant the brow, but I always thought he was saying the buroo (DHSS) always confused the hell out of me.

Don't know the origin of the name "The Broo", but I believe that the flat site where Dalintober School is built was once part of the hill, and was excavated and removed to provide aggregate for infilling the head of the loch when the Mussel Ebb was reclaimed in the 19th Century.

Can anyone else confirm this? It certainly would explain where all the material came from for what in its time must have been a major project in the town.

I remember when we were in Dalintober School we used to get into a lot of trouble with Hector McNeill if we were caught going "up The Broo" either inside or outside of school hours.

Or....

I got hung up on a gorse bush while my big brave brother legged it and left me to who knows what fate (we didn't know it was the polis until they nabbed me). Still, it was impressive how that polisman got over the wall so quick.
OOH did they knock down McCaigs folly.....
