History of Dunaverty

Postby Kenneth » Thu Jan 29, 2009 1:41 am

I'm reading "Salt in my Porridge" by Angus MacVicar and he makes reference to the "Massacre of Dunaverty". Could somone expand on what he has written in the book. I believe there was a fort on Dunaverty Rock at one time inhabited by the MacVicar Clan, but it was overrun at one point? In the 1500's?

Dunaverty Castle had a long and chequered history, being sited in a strategically important position. The massacre of MacDonalds took place in 1647 and involved a much greater number of casualties than the better known Glencoe massacre of 1692.

Kintyre in the 17th Century by Andrew McKerral, published in 1948 and republished in 2002. gives a detailed account of the massacre and the historical context of the events leading up to it. I believe it may still be available.

Thank you all for your quick response, I'll try to obtain "Kintyre in the 17th C" Although I spent the first ten years of my life in Campbeltown, history was not first on my mind. I guess as we age, where we come from, becomes a lot more important.

The Wikipedia entry, whilst quite informative, states that the locality is now known as "Blood Rock" I must confess that I have never heard anybody local referring to Dunaverty as "Blood Rock". Is this correct or not?
