Maybe?

Postby NelsonL1995 » Sat Feb 07, 2009 4:00 pm

I was told that when The Cross was Further up the main street, next to the Town hall, there was a drinking fountain infront of it. I was also told that it is still there, but underground? :? Thats the bit I don't believe.

Anybody know anything of it?

Yes, it was situated on Main Street between Kirk St and Cross St.
There was a fountain there, you can see it in the photo's in the Historic Kintyre site.
The Cross was moved at the start of WW2 to the present location for safety, the spring,
like the town burn, Mill Burn etc would have been piped off long ago.

I think I can vaguely remember in the dim and distant past when I was but a lad, a large hole appeared at the site in the Main St. If I remember correctly when the cross was removed to the cemetery for safe keeping during the war, the well pit had only been covered over with a couple of wooden planks which had rotted and gave way. I think I have seen a photo of it recently somewhere, does anyone have a copy?

Was the water source for the fountain not unearthed when Main St was taken right down to the rubble and completely resurfaced in the late 1960s? I seem to remember hearing something about that at the time.
