Woke up Saturday morning - don't know why - but I had "Downbound Train" going through my head, especially the lyrics "she said Joe, I gotta go, we had it once, we ain't got it anymore". So dug out the album, and listen to it for the first time in must be a dozen years - it was great.

Couldn't help thinking of back home whilst listenting to My Hometown, and to paraphrase Bruce ever so slightly:

Now Main Street's whitewashed windows and vacant stores
Seems like there aint nobody wants to come down here no more
Theyre closing down the Vestas mill out the West Road track
Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they ain't coming back
:(

Still a great album, I was surprised at the number of quite sad songs there are on there - I didn't really remember it that way, but I suppose as you get older you start to read different things into it!

I've got the MTV Storytellers DVD to watch tonight!

Happy Halloween from Bruce! Ags, you'll love this! Here's my Halloween card for you - and never mind the pale horse he's riding - I'm changing my name again to Kerosene!

Do You Think Bruce Springsteen Would Fancy Me?

By Pam Ayres

Do you think Bruce Springsteen would fancy me?
I know I’ve just turned forty-three,
And one eye’s gone at a funny angle
And I have to wear a copper bangle,
As I’ve got arthritis in this left knee,
But d’you think Bruce Springsteen would fancy me?

He might like an older bird,
Someone not of the common herd,
Old and inhibition free,
Well, he need look no further than me,
I’ve lost the looks that once I had,
But then perhaps his eyesight’s bad,
My skin’s quite good, and me teeth – fantastic!
Crafted from the finest plastic,
So next weekend at the NEC,
Do you think Bruce Springsteen would fancy me?

He might like to dance with me,
If I keep the weight off me gammy knee,
But there again, me kneecaps click,
Still, I needn’t take me walking stick.
No, I’d be like a magnet to him,
The sight of me would go straight through him,
One boss eye and me hair gone grey,
Singing ‘Born in the USA’.

Course, Bruce is used to admiration,
He’s idolised in every nation,
Cheered and clapped in every state,
Me? I’m clapped at half past eight.
Me husband says I must be mad,
And didn’t I know Bruce Springsteen had,
Teenage bimbos wall to wall,
Young and slim and brown and tall,
They can dance and stay up late,
Their knees don’t click and their eyes go straight,
He says Bruce wants rock and rhythm,
Not some old bird’s rheumatism.

But I don’t care, I know I’m right,
At the NEC next Friday night,
Though there might be thousands there,
Or eyes will meet in a thrilling stare,
I’ll do me slow, seductive grin,
I hope to God me teeth stay in,
And in that flash of recognition,
Bruce and I will have . . . ignition.

Draw the veil on he and I,
Alone against the starlit sky,
The billows pound upon the shore,
And me clicking knee will be heard . . . no more.
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted

Although I did listen to them, they didn't introduce me to the great man. It was actually Bob Seger! I loved 'Night Moves' and bought the album and then I heard him interviewed on the radio saying he was influenced by Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen. A friend of mine said her boyfriend was into Bruce and I went round his house and he played me 'Thunder Road' which blew me away. So I got into him then but was not a huge fan. Then I bought my first album, Darkness on the Edge of Town and played it non-stop. That's the music that I listened to in my first year of married life! (I was married that year). However, when The River came out I was totally hooked and played that tape until it was worn through!
When I went to my first concert at Wembley, the Born in the USA Tour, it was with my friend's now-husband, who travelled up from Glasgow. That's a story all of its own which I will share with you over a bottle of vino on my next trip up North! :D

Why? Is that how you got into Bruce?

Govangirl I went the other way from Bruce to Seger. Against the Wind and Stranger in Town being my favourite Seger albums. Just sensational.

PS. I was brucewashed as a 'baby' (shut it Ags!) by my older brother, I had no choice in the matter, thank god he wasn't into The Carpenters

Finally Govangirl I was thinking about you tonight (oo-er) when listening to Downbound Train at full tilt. And I thought surely those lyrics are one for an English Class? Now who would be a cool enough teacher to present them  Genius -especially the bits in red.

I had a job, I had a girl
I had something going mister in this world
I got laid off down at the lumber yard
Our love went bad, times got hard
Now I work down at the carwash
Where all it ever does is rain

Dont you feel like youre a rider on a downbound train

She just said joe I gotta go
We had it once we aint got it any more

She packed her bags left me behind
She bought a ticket on the central line
Nights as I sleep, I hear that whistle whining
I feel her kiss in the misty rain
And I feel like Im a rider on a downbound train

Last night I heard your voice
You were crying, crying, you were so alone
You said your love had never died
You were waiting for me at home
Put on my jacket, I ran through the woods
I ran till I thought my chest would explode
There in the clearing, beyond the highway
In the moonlight, our wedding house shone
I rushed through the yard, I burst through the front door
My head pounding hard, up the stairs I climbed
The room was dark, our bed was empty
Then I heard that long whistle whine
And I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried

Now I swing a sledge hammer on a railroad gang
Knocking down them cross ties, working in the rain
Now dont it feel like youre a rider on a downbound train

I can hear it now - "So class, what do you conclude from that? Yes Johnny ......."

Miss, he should just let her go, get over it, SHE'S GONE!!!!

Good to have you back sheik!!
Actually GG I was "brucewashed" too - I only had one album before I met Mr Ags.....now I have no room for my Duran Duran cd's anywhere!! I nearly believed that for a minute myself.....LP's that should have read
Iain saw SAHB and Frankie Millar as a boy in Glasgow and is still an enormous fan!! I think there are 3 fans!! Mr Ags, Abbey Craig and LO  The Boss followed on from there!! Mr A is having a wee snore in the cosy chair tonight but I will get him replying himself tomorrow!!
I picked up a book last night called "tougher than the rest" - how interesting to read about songs that you don't always appreciate the words of!!

Sheik, that's a good one to use. I'll add it to my collection as I'm going to give groups different ones so I'll let you know how I get on. I love Downbound Train.
Ags, My husband was really into the SAHB and I recall him taking me to Green's Playhouse in Glasgow to see them (we were only teenagers and weren't married). In the middle of it, Alex pulled his trousers and everything else down on stage and bared his naked butt. I was outraged! I remember hubby laughing and cheering but I was mortified and wouldn't even watch any more! I have to say I was a very niave, innocent lassie and have always claimed I could have stayed that way if I hadn't married him!!!!!!!!!!

Got the details today about Bruce's new album! Here it is:

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN'S "WORKING ON A DREAM" SET FOR JANUARY 27 RELEASE

Bruce Springsteen's new album "Working on a Dream" has been set for a January 27 release on Columbia Records. "Working on a Dream" was recorded with the E Street Band and features twelve new Springsteen compositions plus two bonus tracks. It is the fourth collaboration between Springsteen and Brendan O'Brien, who produced and mixed the album.

"Working on a Dream" Song Titles:

1. Outlaw Pete
2. My Lucky Day
3. Working on a Dream
4. Queen of the Supermarket
5. What Love Can Do
6. This Life
7. Good Eye
8. Tomorrow Never Knows
9. Life Itself
10. Kingdom of Days
11. Surprise, Surprise
12. The Last Carnival

Bonus tracks:
The Wrestler
A Night with the Jersey Devil

Bruce Springsteen said, "Towards the end of recording 'Magic,' excited by the return to pop production sounds, I continued writing. When my friend producer Brendan O'Brien heard the new songs, he said, 'Let's keep going.' Over the course of the next year, that's just what we did, recording with the E Street Band during the breaks on last year's tour. I hope 'Working on a Dream' has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we've ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end."

"Working on a Dream" is Bruce Springsteen's twenty-fourth album and was recorded and mixed at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, GA with additional recording in New York City, Los Angeles, and New Jersey.

Fantastic news or what! And it will mean a new tour too! Roll on January 27th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D
