Kintyre Food Bank

Postby PastorFerguson » Sat Aug 16, 2014 7:06 pm

Hi all

Over the last few months, a number of individuals have been going through the process of setting up a Food Bank serving Campbeltown and the local area. With the numbers of individuals and families facing food poverty increasing, we want to ensure that nobody in Campbeltown has to suffer not being able to eat or care for their family.

Working on a referral basis (by Social Work etc), you are able to receive a food parcel to help you when you are struggling. This service is open to everybody in our community, you dont need to feel embarrassed or shame in asking for help, we are here for you!

We are close to officially opening in October (although parcels are available now!) but need your help in spreading the word. Take a look at our website page (we will update with more information soon) and our facebook page - let everyone know, nobody has to suffer from food poverty!

We are also accepting donations (both food and financial), for more details on how to donate please email admin@kintyrefoodbank.co.uk

It is a sad reflection on today's society that a food bank is needed in Campbeltown

But are food banks not just available to folks on benefits? The insinuation is that everyone can go there, but my understanding of the food banks down here is that they are not actually readily available

I think foodbanks are open to all, but you have to have a referral from some official organisation. Since the original post I've been reading some of the info on the Trussel Trust website. I think the Trussel Trust run most of the food backs in the UK.

This is some of what they have to say about who they help

"Many foodbank clients are low income families hit by a crisis that is not their fault such as redundancy,
reduced working hours or something as seemingly small as an unexpected bill. Others are victims of
domestic violence, people experiencing benefit delay or facing debt problems or those hit by illness.

Often foodbank clients face decisions between eating and paying the rent. Some are
so desperate that they consider stealing to feed their children. A report by Netmums
found that 1 in every 5 mums regularly skip meals to feed their children. Foodbanks
meet mothers in this situation every day.

Less than five per cent of foodbank clients are homeless, many are working families.
Typically, one third of foodbank recipients are children. "

There is also a good chart in this document, which shows the relative frequency of the reasons behind people's us e of foodback.
