Cinema News

***CINEMA NEWS***
In the last few weeks we’ve served over 1,000 people – this is great news for the cinema and great news for you, as the film distributors are keen to see a successful cinema, so well supported locally and we’ll get more films at the same time as the big cities as a result. Thank you.
We’ve changed a few things at the cinema to improve the way we operate. We’re now open every Friday and will screen a variety of films each and every day. We’ve introduced a new box office system which enables you to buy tickets, popcorn and drinks all in one go. You can also book tickets in advance for all shows listed. There’s a new web site in development which will enable on-line booking with debit and credit cards - http://www.campbeltownpicturehouse.co.uk . We’ll be installing a debit and credit card machine at the cinema very soon as well to make it easier for you to buy tickets and we’re introducing some live events.
Our staff team have been doing a terrific job in making these changes for you and they can be contacted on 01586 553899 each day. As we are coming into the summer season we may be looking for some additional team members to help us. Thank you to all who have applied so far. We’ll be in contact.

Kids Club

Postby PictureHouse » Sun Apr 13, 2014 12:37 pm

***KIDS CLUB***

We are introducing a new price of £1.95 for some family and children’s films which we release at the Picture House. This week Tinkerbell & The Pirate Fairy (U) Daily: 12.00 and Escape from Planet Earth (U) Fri - Mon: 12.00 (over the Easter Weekend) are our Kid’s Club offers. There’s no membership card or joining fee needed and all members of the family can attend at the same low price of £1.95. We are keen to see the cinema used throughout the day and be good value. We’ll run films like Rio 2 on UK release at standard prices and possibly bring them back for a Kid’s Club screening at a later date. Kid’s Club will either be late morning or early afternoon at weekends and during holiday periods.

Community views invited on the new programme at
Campbeltown Picture House

An open public meeting will be held on Monday 28 April at 6:00pm in The Picture House, Campbeltown when cinemagoers will be able to discuss the recently introduced new approach to programming and operating the cinema.

Rob Arthur of The Thurso Cinema will outline his ideas on how the historic cinema can benefit from more screenings, more films and live performances from all the world's top class venues for theatre, opera, classical and rock music, and guided tours of exhibitions.

The Picture House management and staff are keen to hear comments and views from the community about the future of the cinema as it prepares plans and funding bids for a major redevelopment of the building.

All interested members of the community are invited to attend.

Jane Mayo, Chairman of Campbeltown Community Business, said:

“We strongly encourage anyone with an interest in the future of the cinema to come along and take part in this meeting’.

Rob Arthur, Managing Director of Thurso Cinema said:

“I’m looking forward to outlining our film plans for the summer as well as great live relays of world-class performances from the Royal Ballet, the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and a concert by André Rieu in July.”

With all the exciting new developments at the cinema, you'd think they'd update the website regularly. The 'what's on' page hasn't been updated since April!

I think they are going through the process of migrating the old site onto a new updated site where you can buy tickets online, not sure why it's not been set up to you redirect to the new site yet, check out http://campbeltownpicturehouse.co.uk/ for all timings etc

WTC - I'm shocked too! And very very disappointed. I thought they were just 'migrating' websites but looks like they are hibernating?! Such sad news.

I'm sure the addition of refurb, cafe, 2nd screen etc would be fabulous but can't it just keep running it as it is at present to keep it open? Has too much money been spent on lots of screenings etc? Could they even just revert to at least put on on 1-2 showings a day again incorporating Fridays and weekend matinees and live performances , reducing costs but keeping it open?

Hi Elaine, please find below a press release detailing the reasons the cinema is closing prior to fundraising.

Campbeltown Picture House to close at the end of August, Campbeltown Community Business continues efforts to raise £3 million for redevelopment plans

Picture House facilities currently not sustainable due to need for restoration and improvement

Campbeltown Picture House is to close on 27th August, due to the current facilities not enabling the community run social enterprise to be commercially viable in the short term.

Despite having had its best season for ticket sales in many years, and receiving extremely positive comments from the community following the recent changes in the operation, the Picture House is in need of substantial improvement before it can become a sustainable modern cinema.

The cinema’s trading business, The Picture House, Campbeltown Limited, will be placed into voluntary liquidation on 29th August, whilst the parent organisation, Campbeltown Community Business Limited, which owns all of the Picture House’s assets, will remain intact. The volunteer Board will focus their time and endeavours to secure a current shortfall in the £3 million funding required to redevelop the facilities and create a modernised and refurbished cinema to better serve the local community in a sustainable manner.

Two full time and five part-time employees have been informed and CCB will do all it can to support employees to help them to identify and secure future employment or training opportunities.

Jane Mayo, Chairman, Campbeltown Community Business said, “Having fought long and hard to secure the future of the Picture House, with regret we have been left with no option other than to cease trading in our current form for the short term future. There have been recent successes , for example streaming live events from Andre Rieu and Monty Python and live theatre from Mull Theatre, but the building requires a significant refurbishment to meet the needs of all members of the community.

“We would like to thank all our employees, volunteers, customers and others who have supported the Picture House in recent years.

“Campbeltown Community Business will continue to fundraise to reach our development target of £3 million in funding, which will see The Picture House re-open in 2016 with a brand new second screen, a new foyer and cafe bar. We have developed a Business Plan which clearly demonstrates that a redeveloped Picture House will be able to perform much better financially and be a sustainable community enterprise. The two screen operation will allow a much expanded range of films as well as event cinema performances and even heritage related activities.”.

Rob Arthur, Interim Manager, Campbeltown Picture House who is also Managing Director of The Thurso Cinema said, “We are fully committed to supporting Campbeltown Community Business over the next two years as they aim to secure funding to re-develop and re-open The Picture House. The business needs to focus on providing a cinema for the people of Campbeltown and Kintyre which maintains the heritage of the current building and engages with all ages and all parts of the community using the latest digital technology. Significant improvements in the lobby and retail areas are envisaged to offer the community a wider range of food, snacks and drinks which, alongside a broader range of films and live events will ensure long-term sustainability for the venue. After re-development the cinema will be a significant local employer and we look forward to welcoming customers back to the Picture House on completion of re-development works.”

The final screenings at the Picture House will be held on Wednesday 27th and details can be found on http://campbeltownpicturehouse.co.uk/

Anybody looking to support the redevelopment fund can provide donations to the fundraising campaign or enter a competition to win prizes here - http://pick-a-peck.co.uk/
<Ends>

This is devastating news. But I'm really not 'getting' the reasons given for closure. Apparently, the cinema building is "currently not sustainable due to need for restoration and improvement". What does that actually mean? It's open tonight. It will remain open until 27 August. Presumably the building is just as 'unsustainable' today as it was yesterday and as it will be until 27 August and presumably beyond. So far as I know, there's been no survey that shows the building to be unsafe. That being so, there's no urgent buildings-related requirement to close. So why the sudden decision to do so?

If, of course, it's simply a case of the cinema operation making a massive loss, why not just say so?
