sorry this is so lengthy. it's just the info i have saved. i have 2 main goals at this time:
1) i was raised being told the the mac'illeghuirms were a sept of the stewarts or at least had some connection. trying to sort that out.
2) to get as much information on Angus W. BLUE[/color] (b.1894) in montgomery alabama
of course, i would like to put together a succint geneaology going back to scotland. being a.d.d., i struggle often with these forums, so please be patient with me.
"The name Blue appears to have come into being in Argyll as an English-language equivalent for a Gaelic name which was thought to stand for Mac'illeghuirm, "Son of the blue-eyed lad"; the lad in question being assumed to have been a MacMillan because of the name of Blue's long association with the clan. The fact however that there's no traditional tale about such a blue-eyed MacMillan - as there is about the Brown-haired clansman from whom the sept of Brown are said to derive - suggests that a more recent interpretation of the name may well be correct.
The alternative explanation of the original Gaelic name is that it stands for Mac Ghille-Ghuirman, "Son of the Servant or Devotee of St. Gorman".** In the light of the MacMillans' medieval connections with other saintly cults this does look more likely. As such it's a name that appears in many parts of Scotland as well as in Argyll, where the "translation" to Blue became popular in the mid-18th century - a process paralleled with many other difficult Gaelic names (see in particular the MacMillan septs of Bell and MacGill)."
*i looked up st. gorman - seems he was a missionary in denmark in 932, but it doesn't say where he was a missionary from. at first i thought this could be where the scottish anderson connection came in, but in denmark it was more than likely the andersen spelling. but when you're going back that far, nothing is trustworthy
there was a st. o'gorman from ireland, but i don't think it's the same one. could gorman be a spin from ghuirm i wonder.

The immigrant:
S4. Malcolm BLUE (1700-1766), m. Marian/Sarah SMITH (ca1710-1812). He was a native of Cantyre, Argyllshire, Scotland, and emigrated from North Knapdale, Argyllshire, in the year 1748. He brought with him his wife (named both Mary and Sarah in C1, Sarah in C29 and C31) and their three eldest sons. They sailed from Greenock, Scotland, landed at Wilmington NC, and continued up the Cape Fear River. It has been said that he came with Neill McNEILL’s colony, but Neill came in 1735, 13 years before the arrival of Malcolm. Malcolm did come with the swarm of refugees that fled from the Hanoverian persecution that followed the “Rising of the ‘45”, when Prince Charles Edward’s hopes were crushed at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. It is possible that he had contact with the NcNeill Colony, but in 1748 he purchased land at Long Street Church, about 12 miles northwest of the present town of Fayetteville, Cumberland Co. NC, and built up a farm where he lived and died. This farm is still owned by his descendants (1981) and bears his name. One source indicates that Malcolm had several brothers and sisters, among whom was John BLUE who came to America from Scotland in 1755 with the forces of General BRADDOCK. Malcolm left a will naming “my oldest son John” and “my two eldest sons John and Duncan”, and four “youngest children”. In the following list of children, the inclusion of Daniel and James is questionable. In the latter part of her life, Marian went to Richmond Co. NC and lived with her children. She is buried in her son John’s cemetery along with sons Dugald, Neill and Malcolm. It is believed (C5) that this BLUE family took no active part in the Revolutionary War, but “passively sided with the King, as nearly all the Scotch families did.”
