Name of cottage on Saddell Bay?

Postby ChrisA » Tue Aug 02, 2011 6:53 pm

Hi guys, i'm just doing a video for another of my tracks and need to know the name of the tiny cottage on Saddell Bay - the one on the opposite end of the beach to the castle, as used on Macca's Mull Of Kintyre vid.

I checked the Landmark trust site and found this - but if this IS the one I mean, then it has recently been done up as it wasn't looking like that last year! Also if so, I'd like to know if Cul Na Shee is it's historic name - or a Trust addition?

http://bookings.landmarktrust.org.uk/BuildingDetails/Overview/168/Cul_na_Shee

So, if anyone knows name and/or any history, would be good to hear!

The northerly cottage at the far end of the bay was Port Na Gael. The three at the southern end of the bay were Shore Cottage, Ferryman's Cottage, Cuil Na Sith. Not been there in a long time, may have changed.

ah, so just need confirmation that 'Cul Na Shee' is/was Port Na Gael. (Incidentally, what does Port na gael mean? )

Cul Na Shee will be Cuil Na Sithe, I think, which is behind the castle. The one on its' own at the far end (east ?) is Port Na Gael, which could mean either Port of the Gael or Tune of the Gael (probably Port ).
Cuil Na Sithe will be Peaceful Place / Corner.
Looking at the MOK video, it looks like Port Na Gael that Linda walks from. She appears to have a baby over her shoulder, which has disappeared by the time she meets Paul and Denny on the beach ( or have I not worn my new specs in yet ! ). Also, there's a man fixing a hole in the fence on the right of the picture as she leaves the cottage, and possibly a dog running away as she begins to walk. I'm sure you'll know all about editing.

Incidentally, my wife and daughter doing the 'Linda walk' from that little cottage appears (by way of subtle homage) in my Back To Kintyre video. Skip to around 4.50 if you cannot bear the boredom ...

I think Port Na Gael was inhabited until the 1970s - maybe about the time of the MOK record, but the Landmark Trust have bought properties at Saddell Bay since then. The waves hitting the rocks at the start of the video is Pluck Point, and you can see Pluck Wood behind the Port Na Gael cottage.

Port na Gael = Port of the Gael was inhabited until 1979 by my paternal grandfathers
cousin, Madge Morrison. She lived there with her brother, and worked as the cook for th
Mortons at Saddell House.
The first house past the castle is Shore Cottage, next is The Ferry House and then Cuill Na Sithe.
My mother was reared at the Lodge at the top of the avenue.

Petewick, wow, I'd love to hear any stories - or see any pics - of your family's time around Saddell. My wife and I have made a connection with the place, and always return when we are in Kintyre.

Oh, and for completion to the thread, the finished video is here, and starts at a rather spooky looking Port na Gael!

Hi Folks,

My apologies for the thread drift here but I was hoping to appeal for any historical information regarding another (now ruined) cottage in this area.

The cottage in question is located on Pluck Point on a shoreside location. It is not accessible by road or indeed path of any significance. It is heavily overgrown with vegetation and the roof is long since gone with just two gable ends remaining.

It may have one belonged to a member of the Livingstone or McCallum family?

If anyone has any local knowledge to share on this I would be very grateful.

Hi

excuse very late contribution to this thread.
My mother Cynthia Morrison was a first cousin of Madge and visited when Madge was still living there in the summer times. (Family gravestone is in local cemetery.) Madge's brother Dugald was on his annual visit, and took Stuart Morrison (Canadian first cousin) round by boat to visit the ruins on the shore. My mother was taken by road and path. The Pluck was occupied by my grandfather's family in the 19th century and can be found on the census returns. Port na Gael was first occupied by one of the daughters of the family.

It is about seven years since I found the remains of the house on the third attempt (My mother had been unable to retrace her steps, and basically it was further from Pluck Point than she thought. I found it from a map in the local library.) Astonishing to think so many people lived there. I expect to visit area in April which is how I came across the conversation.

There is a family story that the Campbelltown ferry steered by two lamps, one in the window of Port Na Gael and the other in a window of a house on Arran. Does anyone know where that was on Arran. Various family members were involved with the ferries in the past.

My paternal grandfather was John Morrison from Campbeltown and his brothers and cousins from the
town used to visit their cousins at Saddell.
As it happens my mother was brought up in Saddell and lived at the lodge at the head of the avenue.
She knew Madge and her brother Daniel and remembers Dugald visiting because he used to take his car
along the shore path.
