Broadband Speeds in Kintyre - TEST

Postby Ship called Dignity » Fri Feb 11, 2011 10:38 pm

Here is a useful site to let you know the Broadband speeds you are getting

http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk

So what upload and download speeds are you getting and what package are you on?

Me? A miserable - 1680Kbps download with 337Kbps upload.

Package AOL and just realising it has increased again to £19.98 per month! Time to change. Have been with them since 2000! Any good ISPs out there?

Now to try and get my "MAC" code - I wonder how long I will be on the phone for this one!

I'm with pipex and have no complaints. I'm downstairs on wireless, my younger son is on his xbox in his room and the older one has his xbox and pc running in his. He is playing an online game with msn, facebook etc running. No problems. I pay £29.99 a month. This is for broadband, telephone line rental and all landline calls unlimited. Good luck with the Mac code! Been there a few years ago with tiscali and it was a nightmare trying to get it.

Useful site to know about the local exchange (or you can search for your own exchange if you're not in C'town)

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WSCAP

Essentially what this tells you is (as I understand it) in Campbeltown you have zero alterntives as no-one else (i.e. other than BT) has any equipment in the exchange. So even if it's AOL branded, or Sky or Talk Talk - you're just getting a re-badged BT service :(

So you might get a better deal, but you won't get better speeds.

Aye, and no immediate plans to upgrade the exchange here to 21st Century Network (21CN) either. Speeds can be improved mind you as some ISPs cap the level you get because they know (people like me!) won't complain. Phoned AOL and surprise surprise I have to phone them tomorrow when their cancellation department is open!

Its an ongoing problem over Scotland and especially bad the the past week.
BT have admitted they have had many complaints. Some older exchanges may not have the capacity to keep up with the growing broadband users and they will probably be upgrade in due course I presume. I do regular tests with some giving slow speeds yet everything seems to be normal.
Started off broadband with Tiscali some 5 years past when it became available in Carradale, now Talk Talk which I had some teething problems like all, but I am happy with it at this time.Broadband -line rental-all calls-caller display-1571 comes in at £29 month.

This morning: 6784 kbps and 375 kbps. I always assumed the broadband speeds we receive here were poor, but looking at other peoples results it seems they're not too bad. Still could be better though.

Here's mine - though I am cheating as I'm nowhere near Campbeltown and I'm at work :D :

Image

I think the download speeds some of you are getting are faster than I get at home - think I'm getting around 4.0 Mb/s. I'm upgrading soon to BT Infinity and am told I should be getting 33.9Mb/s (though I'd be happy with anything over 10).

Hope they get your Exchange upgraded asap.
