The *most* important piece of equipment! The only advice I would add is it's essential you get shoes fitted by someone who knows what they're doing. There are a number of specialist running shops in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and expect to take about 20-30 minutes finding a pair that suits you. Don't worry about the brand everyone will have different preferences depending on how much support your feet need. You should expect to replace your shoes about every 500 miles.

Most stores will now video your feet while you're running on a treadmill and play it back to you, so you can actually see the mechanics of your feet in action.

Another tip, if you've never been fitted for shoes before, is take along an old pair with you. This will give the store and excellent idea of where you need support when you run.

Hope this helps.

PS. I've found I've moved from Asics to Mizuno over the years

having a blether with iceblue at the weekend about running shoes, she's in an asics gel 1120 and im in the asics gel 1130. iceblue is having a hard time finding her 1120 in her size, but in my size its greatly reduced. does anyone know if the 1130 is the newer model of the 1120???

they look very similar and it would help out the two of us if we knew, maybe i should pop in and ask linda in intersport

Thanks a lot for that link Dunc R :D I'd been searching everywhere to get these trainers and thought that they had been discontinued. I went on to the website this morning and ordered two pairs immediately ..... incase they sold out  I paid around £60 for my original trainers, so couldn't resist getting two pairs for £80.90 to include postage :D

And as for the name iceblue, I didn't get it from the make of trainers, it was just a name I made up  I got the 1120s from Run 4 It in Glasgow and when I got home and took them out of the box I couldn't believe the coincidence with the name on the box  Obviously, I was destined to wear that particular make of trainers

New shoes

Postby Sid Gallagher » Wed Apr 23, 2008 8:58 pm

I have just received my new running shoes Saucony Progrid Omni 6. :D It was great to get home and see the package waiting to be opened. They are the second pair I've bought and I have replaced the old shoes with exactly the same model.
I paid too much probably, £76 on Wiggle (that includes postage), but I like them a lot because they give a lot of support and have great cushioning. I had Asics Gel 1110 before but found that they stretched and got slack and there was a lot of movement in the ball of my foot when I pushed off that sometimes lead to hot spots or blisters.
I keep the Asics for after races because they are a nice roomy fit. I bought the Asics 3 years ago so maybe they add 10 on each year to the model number. They must have been going a long time then.

I didn't know whether to post this on shoes or music because one of my favourite tracks is Paolo Nuttini "New Shoes". :D They are startlingly white.

wow, go sid, you need a wee trip round a muddy hill to break them in then

does that mean you're going to get faster with the new spring in your step

I did a pleasant 3 miles in the NS tonight (mustn't abuse them at first) and really enjoyed it. Still a reasonable time (and no sweat) so there may be something in what you say F28. Perhaps they are magic shoes. :?

Re: Running Shoes

Postby Rabmacd » Sat Aug 01, 2009 8:34 am

Thought I would bump this one back up to the top. Was in Glasgow, for a few days, doing the annual "lets all see how quickly we can get rid of daddy's hard earned" trip, under the guise of buying school uniforms, but ending up with more clothes than a Stella McCartney fashion show . Anyway, I decided to treat myself to a new pair of running shoes. I went, for my second time, to Achiles' Heel in Great Western Road. Great staff, listen to your mumps and groans, especially about how hard it is to run on soft sand 8) and just running stuff in general.

When it got down to the nitty gritty, I was down to a choice between two pairs---Mizunos or Brooks. The guy got me to do the catwalk again and declared that his opinion was that the Brooks were more suitable to my Cheeky Chappy Charlie Chaplin gait, but that it was, obviously, my choice. When I asked the clincher "How much are they?", he replied " The Mizunos are £70, the Brooks normally retail for £65, but they're in the sale at £45" I thanked and commended him for his honesty and he replied " I'm not here to sell you one pair of shoes, I'm here to sell you ten". Absolutely spot on, the last time I was there, had the recommended shoes not been right for me I probably wouldn't have been back. By the way, the last pair that I bought from there, from a different member of staff, was a pair of Brooks. They know their stuff.

A great advert for a really friendly place. I would thorougly recommend it to anyone, but beware you have to be able to stand on one foot and squat down. DO NOT GO TO BUY SHOES WITH A DRINK IN YOU!!!! YOU WILL SIMPLY FALL OVER ON THE SHOP FLOOR.

Don't know why they do that--it must be to check your balance or the way your ankle works, or maybe it's just a right good laugh looking at the CCTV footage at the end of the day.

You and Stevie Gorman Rab!

Good report though. I have always wanted to have my gait analised and buy the proper shoes....have stuck with size 10 Adidas Supernova for the last 5 or 6 pairs. I'm kinda scared to change now without gait analisis.
