Achadhdubh, Southend

Does anyone have any photos of Achadhdubh, Southend? I believe it was once owned by the Macharioch Estate. I understand the last occupants were Norman Muir and his wife. Look forward to any information :)

I should think you mean what we always called Achnaduie which is a ruin on Macharioch farm. I haven't heard of Norman Muir but I know a family by the name of Gillies once lived there. Shouldn't be too difficult to get a photo if you want it.

Thank you for your reply. I wasnt exactly sure how it is spelt. I looked up an old map of Southend and that was the spelling it gave me. Reason I am looking for a picture is because my gran was born at the house in 1922. "McCallum" it would be interesting to see what the house looked like.

I know where that is! of course Maganru does to  I can see it from here.
I am of the same family of Maganru and we always spelled and said it as Achnaduie but the family in Macharioch always pronounced it and I suppose, spelled it AchadAhdubh ....... Aucha da dooie.

But, there is no doubt it is the same place.

In the fairly recent past the roof was still on and within the last 30 years a high gable end could still be seen but now the ruins are low.

The Gillies family mentioned by Maganru is that of famous Campbeltown author and ferry captain Freddy Gillies and he has often told me his stories from there expressed an interest in the place . I will take him there some day.

AND, as it happens, I am going a walk with 2 of Maganru's cousins tonight very close to Achadhdubh/Achnaduie and will take my camera.

That would be great even to see a picture of the ruin. Hopefully Freddy might have some pics of the house in its glory? Thanks for your reply.

It would be great to see a photo as it's a long time since I saw it close up. Have a nice walk whichever cousins you are going with - could be two of a very large number!

Pictures taken on Friday 17th April 2009 at around 8.00pm.

In case anyone does not know where Auchnaduie/Auchadhubh is.......
The ruined building is situated on Macharioch land on low ground South of Kildavie. Close to Langholm.

The first picture is looking South West towards Eden and Pennyland farms.
The others are taken looking NE towards Polliwilline and the sea.

Thank you very much for posting the pictures. It's a shame to think how quickly it became a ruin. Would be interested to see pictures of it in its glory. Thanks once again. :) :)
