McConnachy family history - Kintyre Peninsula

Postby McConnachy » Sun Feb 25, 2007 1:22 pm

I am searching the McConnachy family who I have traced back to the Kintyre Peninula. I am particular searching John McConnachy (born in Saddell in c.1805 - coastguard moved to Aberdeen), his father Peter McConnachy (born in Sadell c.1779) and potentially his father Duncan McConnachy (born c.1750's?). Does anyone have any information on the McConnachy family in the Kintyre Peninsula? :?:

Separately, I have heard that a book exists called "List of Inhabitants upon Duke of Argyle's Property in 1792" - Edited by A. I. B. Stewart 1991. Does anyone have a copy of this or know where I could see a copy (n Australia?!)? Does anyone know if it is available on-line?

I would greatly appreciate any information to assist my search on my family history.
:D
Thank you in anticipation

McConnachy family research

Postby McConnachy » Thu Mar 01, 2007 11:50 am

Hi JOEMAC

Where in Sth Australia are you from? There is a Brad McConnachy now playing for the Port Adelaide Magpies (u 17's!)

I do not think that I can make an exact match (yet!) but their must be a link somewhere..

I have found two sources which are worth you checking in your searches -

1. http://www.ralstongenealogy.com/keilchurchyard.htm

McCONNACHY Archibald 767 9 Keil old in Southend in Kintyre

2. http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Also your Archibald may well be the 18 year old in the 1841 census detailed below from the FREECEN site -

Piece: SCT1841/531 Place: Saddell & Skipness -Argyllshire Enumeration District: 4
Civil Parish: Saddell Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island:
Folio: 4 Page: 9
Address: Grogport

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MCCONNACHY Duncan M 66 Agricultural Labourer Argyllshire
MCCONNACHY Cathrine F 62 Argyllshire
MCCONNACHY John M 35 Argyllshire
MCCONNACHY Duncan M 29 Argyllshire
MCCONNACHY Ann F 25 Argyllshire
MCCONNACHY Hugh M 20 Argyllshire
MCCONNACHY Archd. M 18 Argyllshire

I had originally thought this was my John McConnachy but I now think that is wrong.....my search continues so if you can make a link then please let me know!!

There is a book called Kintyre -The Hidden Past by Angus Martin ,ISBN 085976 119 3 in which the McConnachy's were mentioned in a paragraph or two. I don't seem to be able to locate the book at the moment. The McConachy's were from the 1800's, not the 1700s. I know that a Hugh and a Duncan were both mentioned. I also believe it said the name goes back to the Duncans.

Inhabitants of the Duke of Argyle's Property in Kintyre 1792

Postby McConnachy » Fri Mar 02, 2007 9:18 am

Thanks so much!

I also understand that there is a book called - "List of Inhabitants upon the Duke of Argyle's Property in Kintyre in 1792" Edited by A. I. B. Stewart
Published by Scottish Records Society, 1991, ISBN 0 902054 12 0

Do you or anyone have access to this book to find out if Peter McConnachy or other McConnachy family members are mentioned? If not, do you know anyone that may have access to the book? :?:

McConnachy - Clan Duncan or Clan Roberston?

Postby McConnachy » Fri Mar 02, 2007 10:05 am

I believe that McConnachy means "Son of the Children of Duncan", who was the first clan chief. I therefore believe McConnachy is part of the Duncan Clan rather than the Robertson clan?

I understand that the derivation of McConnachy is as follows -

* Mac or Mc means "son of"
* Conachie or Connachy is a derivation for Donnachaidh (which is Gaelic for "Children of Duncan").

Therefore McConachie (and therefore I believe McConnachy) means "Son of the Children of Duncan". :!:

There are now many varieties of spelling for McConnachy (eg Maconnachie, McConachie, McConachy, McConnochy and a dozen other variants) as their names were written down as it was pronounced.

I have also read that McConnachy is part of the Robertson clan, but Robert was the great-grandson of Duncan, so I do not strictly believe this is correct.

I would be very interested in whether the Clan Duncan is recognised or not and whether people think that the McConnachy name is part of the Clan Duncan or Clan Robertson? :?:

My Great great Grandfather Donald McIntosh was married to Anne(Agnes) McConochy in March 1848.
My grandmothers sister, Flora Routledge Campbell married Walter Macconachie (I don't have a date on that but I'd guess early 1920s
Not sure if they tie in anywhere.
