Browns of Carradale, Torrisdale and Waterfoot

Postby Naru » Sun May 17, 2015 10:01 pm

My great-great grandmother was Margaret Russell (nee Brown), born in 1843 in Carradale. She was the daughter of Donald Brown, a postman, and Mary McKinlay. Donald and Mary had at least 10 other children.

Any information on the Browns and their descendants in Carradale or elsewhere would be great.

Mary’s parents… Donald abt 1785 and Christin McAlaster abt 1785.

Unfortunately, no mention of a “Russell”! Perhaps another marriage ?
Neil MacDougall had 2 daughters and 3 sons..., one called Margaret MacDougall who died in September 1998 in Carradale. She ran the 'Duncrannag' Guest House, Carradale, Kintyre, Scotland. Apparently, not married.

Hope this helps..., Iain.

I hope the following information will put an end to the confusion over Mary McKinlay. There were two Mary McKinlays They were cousins, and one married Donald Brown. The other Mary McKinlay married Mathew Macdougall and they lived at South Dippen, and later moved to Portrigh. My Granny, Catherine Macdougall and her twin,Agnes were the eldest of their fourteen children. Neil Macdougall,Duncrannag was a son of that family

Catherine Brown (1841-1929), the daughter of Donald Brown and Mary McKinlay was my wife's great grandmother.
Catherine Brown married Thomas Blackburn in 1867 in Paisley, At the time she was in service at a big house in Johnstone.
The Blackburns had 10 children, one of whom Isabella (1884-1962) married James Andrew Dunn in 1917.
Their son James MacKinnon Dunn (1918-2011) was my wife's father.
The Dunn family spent summer holidays at Duncrannag, Carradale in the 1950s up to the mid-1960s

We have just returned from a few days of glorious summer weather in Carradale! :D
