Carradale Patersons

I am keen to find out when the Carradale Patersons came to Kintyre.
Paterson is a Lowland surname, and I wonder if the family came to Kintyre during " the Plantation of Kintyre "
Alternatively the family story is they came to Carradale from Drumamuchlach ( ? Spelling) There is a Drumamuchlach South of Oban, and I think I have a vague notion I have read of Drumamuchlach somewhere in South Kintyre some time ago in the "Kintyre Magazine"
Any suggestions as how to solve the mystery?

I'd be interested in any info too. I've traced the Paterson family back to the late 17th Century in Carradale.

There is a Drumnamucklach at Killean on the west coast of Kintyre. Now self catering accommodation - http://www.killeanestate.com/courtyardh ... intyre.php

Can anyone suggest where any record of Lowland families who came to Kintyre as part of the " Plantation of Kintyre" are likely to be kept ?
Thanks "A ship called Dignity" for confirming there is a Drumamucklach in Kintyre
We'll solve the mystery of the Patersons origins yet!

I discovered recently that the Argyll Patersons were living in Mid Argyll on Lochfyneside, and I wonder if some moved down to Kintyre to land owned by the Duke of Argyll.I have been in touch with the Argyll Archives in Lochgilphead, who tried to help but couldn't.They suggested getting in touch with The Archivist at Inveraray Castle who might have information

Andrew McKerral's book, 'Kintyre in the 17th Century', has a very informative chapter on the Plantation of Kintyre by Lowland lairds and Campbells (from elsewhere in Argyllshire).

There were 12 main tacksmen.

1 The Laird of Ralston
2 The Laird of Dunlop
3 Mr Cuthbert Cunningham
4 James Hamilton of Aitkenhead
5 The heirs of the deceased John Porterfield of Hapland
6 James Hamilton of Ardoch
7 The Laird of Hazlett (Hazelhead)
8 John Cunningham of Hill of Beith
9 Cornet Alexander Mure
10 Colonel Robert Mure
11 Colonel Patrick Montgomerie
12 Captain James Forbes

However, McKerall goes on to say that:

'In addition to the above, who received their tacks in 1650, we find many other names during the next quarter century.'

He then lists names and locations. One of the names is:

'John Paterson in Balnagleck.'

Balnagleck is near Kilchenzie, just north of Campbeltown.

Many thanks,Shona, for the interesting information you posted re the tack men in Kintyre in the middle to late sixteen hundreds. Our family story was that the Paterson family originally came to Carradale from "up the country"and a place called Drumamuchlach was mentioned. There is Drumamuchlach south of Oban."A Ship called Dignity" who appears to have a Carradale Paterson connection, posted there was a Drumamuchlach near Killean on the West side of Kintyre
John Paterson of Balnagleck could well be an ancestor, as the eldest son of each successive generation of my branch of the Patersons, was either called "John" or "Archibald"
We will carry on investigating in the hope we can come up with the answer as to where the Carradale Patersons originally came from

I have written about " Drumamuchlach" but someone has suggested it's "Glenamuchlach" I should be trying to trace, in relation to the Patersons. Anyone heard of it?

Glenmucklach is in Southend parish. The Knockstapple standing stone is nearby: https://canmore.org.uk/site/38725/knockstapple
