Descendants of Hugh Robertson/Mary Mathieson/John McIntyre

Postby CaliGal » Fri Mar 15, 2013 7:35 am

In Campbeltown there was a rather large yours/mine/ours family. Mary Mathieson and Hugh Robertson had 3 children. John McLean McIntyre and Margaret Campbell had 6 children. Then the Robertson widow married the McIntyre widower (in 1887) and they had 7 children.
I'd love contact with descendants of any of the those relationships. I have several pictures to share and get help identifying. And I'd love to fill out my tree. ;-)

McIntyre children (of John McLean McIntyre and Margaret Campbell)
Kate (m. Henry Baxter 1903)
Janet/Jessie (m. Archibald Stevenson 1903)
Bella -my line (m. Archibald Watson 1903)
Maggie (m. James Williamson 1907)
John (? d. 1955)
Annie (m. James Walker 1915)

Robertson children (of Hugh Robertson and Mary Mathieson)
Robert (m. Mary Bell 1905)
Mary (m. Archibald MacKay 1905)
Hughina (m. James Morrison 1913)

McIntyre children (of John McLean McIntyre and Mary Mathieson)
William (m. Catherine McLean 1921)
Helen (m. Morris McSporran 1910)
Flora (m. Donald Sutherland 1915)
Marion (m. Alexander Lyon)
Dugald (m. Mary Weirham)
Jeanie (m. Charles Mees 1918)
Neil (?)

Some of the family about 1890-1902

Lovely photo - sadly, I can't claim a connection!

Not directly. But the man with the beard is John McLean McIntyre, grandson of our famous John McLean. John is the son of Janet McLean McIntyre (who spent her share of jail time).

Some children from this family have reported that Mary Mathieson McIntyre didn't allow questions about the past... They probably assumed it was because of the lost spouses. But perhaps she didn't want graverobbing or "breach of peace" to come up in conversation.

Of course! They are descended from wife No 1!

*claps hands with glee*

Interesting in my family, it was always said that my grandfather's folk were 'a bad lot'. His mother was John McLean's youngest daughter. When they first married, my grandfather and grandmother lived with Catherine Scott McLean. Gran and mother-in-law did not get on.

I've never seen any photos of Catherine and her husband - the family story goes that when Catherine died, my grandmother through out everything connected with the McLeans. Was she, too, trying to hide the past?

So the link may not be direct, a little twig on the McLean branch as it were, but it's a link none-the-less.

Thank you.

My great aunt did the same about a 'mean' grandfather.
I wonder if there was a stigma being a McLean in Campbeltown.

My grandmother was Jeannie McIntyre, daughter of John McLean McIntyre and Mary Mathieson.
I have a copy of this photograph.

Yay! Are we already in contact? I was recently put in contact with Allan (a grandson of Jeannie).

I'm trying to get as many of us as I can find together, so we can share images and help identify pictures. The notes on the back of my photograph says the back row is likely Robertsons and Bella (my g grandmother) was sick (or perhaps already gone) for the photo. That's all I know about that photograph.

I think we were in contact back in 2008, I have not been following up on the family tree for a few years.
I do have photographs, but haven't looked at them for a long time, they are in the loft, so would have to look them out, but it would be great to share.

I think Alastair Mees wife Pamela has done a lot of research into the family tree, Allan is Alastair's brother.

I'm sending you a PM to hook you up with our picture sharing.
I have contact with descendants of Jeannie, Maggie, Bella and Kate. Trying to re-establish contact with descendants of Annie. And I'd love contact with descendants of all the rest.

To anyone else who is reading this in 2013 or years into the future. Please contact us... I'll probably still be at it, 30 years from now.

My Great Great Grandmother Isabella McIntyre is the sister of John McLean McIntyre. She married Malcolm MacKenzie and they moved to Glasgow around 1890. Isabella and Malcolm eventually returned to Campbeltown where they are now buried. The Mackenzie family originated from the Isle of Coll and Malcolm was a butcher to trade.

I've created a facebook group for descendants of John McIntyre's grandfather, John McLean (1808-1873) m. Isabella McIntyre (1809-1853) and m. Catherine Carnegie (1826-1896).
https://www.facebook.com/groups/203482173748692/

I'm hoping to have a group where we can share research, stories, and maybe someday have a big reunion for descendants of our notorious ancestor.

Come join us!
