Argyll Hotel, Southend, Census 1901

Postby Tigrib » Wed Jan 30, 2013 8:43 pm

I have found my 3x removed 1st cousin (Lorn Campbell), born 1856 Kilcalmonell, recorded in the 1901 census as coachman at the Argyll Hotel in Southend. Hotelkeeper was a Mary Gibson, 48, her brother James Taylor, 28, also hotel keeper and two young Taylor children - all born in Southend.
I am just curious to know whether there might be any photos in existence of the hotel, family or even the coachman, either held locally or by descendants of the Gibson/Taylor family who ran the hotel? I tried posting this on the Down Memory Lane and Kintyre History site, but they don't seem to be working any more!?

You are so kind Shona. What a lovely photo. It's possible that Lorn Campbell is in the photo, given his occupation.

Thank you for that.

This book review about Southend appeared in Scottish Field. Click on the link and scroll down and there is a photo of children at Southend School c1910. Perhaps the young Taylor children are in this pic. The review says there are 350 photos in the book.

A great photo of the primary children at Southend School in 1910. Do you think anyone would have names for those children? It would be fascinating to find their names. The picture certainly does draw you in - great expressions on the faces. All beautifully scrubbed up for the occasion!!

Thank you Shona for two very relevant links. I was particularly delighted with the photo of the coach and horses with the very smart coachman - which I love to think might be "our" Lorn Campbell. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us.
