Janet Stewart 1795

Postby oscar » Mon Nov 05, 2012 6:21 pm

I am trying to confirm that Janet Stewart born 5 March 1795 to Peter Stewart and Janet McMurchy is my 3xgt grandmother. She died 4 August 1838 in Kintyre and is buried in a box grave in Kilkerran Cemetery. My Janet Stewart was married to Hugh McRorie but I cannot find any death record for either Janet Stewart or Janet McRory. Can anyone help please?

Hi Oscar ! Welcome to The Kintyre Forum.

Going that far back you're obviously a bit of a specialist ! Are you on Ancestry ? If not, I only saw 2 Janet McMurchy's married to Peter Stewart and the info is sparse with no death dates. (so they are certainly not you) Anyway, one of them provides 9 children from William to Anne.

Forgive my ignorance but what's a box grave ? If it has a headstone perhaps you could research the Ralston site. If you find a name and date that corresponds, it’ll give you a reference number..., as such, just contact Muriel in Edinburgh and she’ll send you a free image with, I hope, some family info.

Of course, the advantage of this site is the fact that you just might find some Campbeltonian Stewarts or McMurchy’s connected to your research.

Good luck..., Iain.

Hi Iain
Thank you for your reply. A box grave is literally that, a huge box shaped tomb is probably the best way to describe it. I'm sure someone will pick me up on that! I have been on the Ralston site and I have a photo of the grave showing the names and dates for Peter Stewart and family. I am on Ancestry and Scotlandspeople. The information on Ancestry trees shows my Janet Stewart as Peter's daughter but I prefer to get proof for myself rather than just take these trees as definite. I have a Timeline History on Peter Stewart and it claims his daughter Janet married Hugh McRorie and I am trying to find out where the information was obtained. No joy so far.

Thanks Janet..., you deserve an Oscar !

Surprised such a "box grave" doesn't confirm his wife’s details ! Anyway..., good luck ! ..., Iain.
