MacKinnon ancestry

Postby simonbell » Tue Feb 07, 2012 4:24 pm

I am looking for information on my paternal grandparents, Peter MacKinnon, who was a policeman, born 7 January 1873. His parents were Lachlan (a shepherd) & Janet, nee Cameron.
Peter married Jane Hamilton in Campeltown on 30 June 1897.
At some point they let for Glasgow, where my father was born.

Hopefully there may be some more info out there.

Thank you so much for this info. It's all a surprise, as I really know nothing of my ancestors.
Just found out that Strath, Inverness is on Skye.
Interesting that the spelling of the name changed

Simon, spelling is one of the biggest problems in genealogy..., and linked to all that are the official idiots who filled in the forms.
Extremely busy for the time being but I'll send you a private message next week.

Hi Simon ! It appears that you have no access to census info and I was about to send you a link giving free access to census info.
http://www.falmouthpubliclibrary.org/?/ ... databases/
Click on Genealogy Database... then, “only available in the library.”

Unfortunately, over the past few weeks, it looks as if “Ancestry” has bought the library’s database. As such, the loophole is finally closed. Of course..., it was only a matter of time ! Sorry ! :(

If you need any info, just let me know.
As a Christmas present, you should ask your wife for a subscription to Ancestry..., it’s absolutely marvellous !

Thanks for all that.

Coming up against brick walls on Scotland's People. Once your back to the 1700s it's hard to be sure you have the right people. It seems that the MacKinnon side of the family all come from Strath, on Skye, but there are a lot of MacKinnons there. One possible ancestor is listed as Donald Mckinnon alias McShirie, which is a mystery.

It's frustrating to come to a halt. I can't find a records of my mother's birth, in 1910, so another mystery.

Hi Simon..., I thought Scotland’s People had census details..., perhaps not !
Your in luck concerning Lachlan and your mother as both saw the 1911 census..., but you’ll have to wait until it’s published in Scotland. (could be wrong there ?)
Anyway, I looked at members on Ancestry following the same family and found; the Power/Wiggins family and they have Peter as being a bit younger..., abt 1877.

Peter McKinnon b1877. Residence 1881and 91, Strath, Inverness.
Father Lachlan 1843 died 27th march 1924 Isle of Skye.
Grandfather Neil abt1791died 14th of May 1867 in Elgol, Strath.
Grandmother Isabella McAllister 1795 – 1870.
Gr Grandfather Alexander
Gr Grandmother Catherine Grant.

-----------------------------------------
Mother Janet 1849.

Children:
Neil McKinnon 1875 –
Peter 1877 –
Alexander 1881
Anne 1884 –
Mathew 1886 –
John 1890 –
Mary A. 1891 –
Isabella 1893 -

Thanks for that extra info, it's a real help. It appears I may have the wrong great grandfather on my tree.

The 1911 census for Scotland is online & I have my mother at 6 months on the census, but no record of the birth. She was born Elizabeth McArthur Bell, the the best of my knowledge on 30 sept 1910, to William bell & Elizabeth Samson Bell

Confusion continues. I have Peter's birth in 1873, and have Lachlan aged 8 on 1851 census, with father Charles & mother Carharine.

I seem to have made a few errors.

Peter was born in Solam, Islay, to Lachlan & Janet.

Thank you so much for this, it's all such a surprise. I'll take some time to digest it all, and it gives me more place to search as I go further back.

Interesting that Mckinnon changed to MacKinnon
