First Monday
Our First Monday Presentation for December is Made in Dagenham. The film is a dramatisation of the 1968 Ford sewing machinists strike at the Ford Dagenham assembly plant, where female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination and the desire for equal pay. The walkout was instrumental in the Equal Pay Act 1970.

Made in Dagenham is a British film directed by Nigel Cole. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Miranda Richardson, Rosamund Pike and Jaime Winstone. The film's theme song, with lyrics by Billy Bragg, is performed by Sandie Shaw, herself a former Dagenham Ford worker.

Argyll Colliery Film Now Available Online
Jan Nimmo's hugely popular film The Road to Drumleman: Memories of the Argyll Colliery can now be seen online. The film is hosted on Vimeo and can be found at http://vimeo.com/18329053

The film was made by Jan, who comes from Campbeltown, and premiered at the Picture House last year. The original showing was packed out and a further showing had to be put on to accommodate all who turned up on the night. DVD sales of the film have also been very successful.

Jan wrote, produced, directed and filmed the documentary herself and was helped with the editing by Inigo Garrido. The film tells the story of Kintyre's last coal mine, the Argyll Colliery which produced coal from 1947 to 1967. Jan's late father, Neil Nimmo, was the inspiration for her documentary.

Centenary Project Update
Everyone in Campbeltown and Kintyre was invited along to Campbeltown Town Hall on Tuesday 1st February to have their say about the future of the cinema. The Wee Pictures is 100 years old in 2013 and work is taking place to conserve and restore the interior of the building, bring the annexe back to life and bring the magnificent old building into use more.

'This is a building of international historic importance, right here in Campbeltown,' said Martin Hadlington, the conservation architect working with the Campbeltown Community Business Ltd, ' It was built only seven years after the oldest cinema in the world.'

The building is unique in that it has remained as a cinema throughout its life and its historic interior is intact.

The cinema was awarded £700,000 of Heritage Lottery Fund money in September last year. Cinema supporters are now working on a further lottery bid. Jura Consultants are working with Canpbeltown Community Business Ltd to help develop their plans and prepare a bid for lottery funds. The Edinburgh based company are experts in providing tourism, culture and heritage ventures with support and advice. Jura Consultants held three showings of a presentation about the centenary project and held discussions and the day was very well attended.

Centenary Project Update
The Design Team and CCB Ltd met to discuss progress of the project following a visit to the Hippodrome Cinema in Bo'ness on 8th February. Local consultations were going well with nearly 100 on-line surveys and 10 hard copy surveys returned. The possibility of talking to people in the street was also suggested to get additional views. There will be a further press release to remind public.

Discussions about the use of the interior space of the cinema and annexe continue with no firm decisions being made at present. Suggested options include; cafe facilities, an exhibition space, a second smaller screen, outdoor seating in the courtyard with possibly a childrens play area. Additional opportunities to help the viability of the cinema business were also discussed.

Martin Hadlington said that there may be a possibility for additional revenue from renewables. The south facing roofs could be fitted with photovoltaic solar panels which could produce an income of £5000 to £10,000 per year.

New Platinum Sponsor for Picture House

The Directors of the Picture House are pleased to announce that Machrihanish Dunes have become a new Platinum Business Sponsor of the cinema.

Machrihanish Dunes lies at the very heart of the world of links golf, within easy reach of 7 of the worlds Top 100 courses. The championship-calibre links at Machrihanish Dunes were named one of the UK's top 100 courses by Golf World magazine, and one of the top 30 Modern Courses in Great Britain and Ireland by Golfweek.

If your business is interested in sponsoring the cinema then more information can be found here. You can see our current business sponsors here.

Coffee Morning a success!

The Wee Pictures Supporters Group were delighted with their first fund raising venture. A most successful Coffee Morning was held in the newly refurbished Red Cross Hall recently. The stars of the day were the singers from The Kintyre Chorale who most generously gave their time to entertain all the coffee drinkers. Flushed with their own triumph in their recent concert, it was clear that they were happy to have a second chance to perform some of their programme. Thanks must be given especially to Paula McLean, their conductor and David McEwan, their accompanist, as well as the four soloists.

Isobel Armour kindly devised a fiendish film quiz and the winner was Alexis Law from Sound of Kintyre. So together with the proceeds from this and donations, which are continuing to come in, The Picture House's Centenary Project took over one thousand pounds on the day! The legendary generosity of the people of Campbeltown and South Kintyre has to be commended, as well as the tip top baking, which disappeared in moments. Donations to the raffle meant that many people went home with prizes too. And an amazing individual donation of over £12 was given in coppers picked up off the streets of the town over the past couple of years! Thank you so very much to everyone who helped, donated and came on the day.

Following the 98th Birthday of The Picture House at the end of May BBC Radio Scotland came to the town to record a programme for the Movie Cafe programme, which was broadcast on Thursday 9th June. It is available as a Listen Again feature on the website at www.weepictures.co.uk/listenagain.php

Meanwhile development work is continuing with the conservation and renewal project and the Community Business Board hope to be able to start informing the public of the exciting plans very soon.

First Monday returns for February

Imagine sneaking away to spend seven days with the most famous woman in the world? My Week with Marilyn is based on Colin Clark's The Prince, The Showgirl and Me and My Week with Marilyn; two diary accounts, which document his time on the set of the film The Prince and the Showgirl and the time he spent with Monroe.

In the summer of 1956 England is abuzz when Marilyn Monroe (played by Michelle Williams) arrives to shoot the film, The Prince and the Showgirl.

She hopes working with the legendary Laurence Olivier (played by Kenneth Branagh) will give her acting further credibility, while he hopes the film will give his career a boost at the box office and add some Hollywood glamour. But Monroe becomes difficult on the set after feeling abandoned as her playwright husband Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), leaves the country for Paris.

Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) works as an assistant on the film set. He is perceptive in his assessment of what seems to be going wrong in Monroe's life: too many hangers-on, intense insecurity, and too many pills. Olivier, meanwhile, is impatient and condescending toward her.

At a certain point, feeling isolated and overwhelmed, Monroe turns her attention to Clark, who gives her comfort and solace. Before long, she escapes the film set and a remarkable true adventure takes place.

Monroe and Clark spent an innocent week together in the English countryside and Clark becomes her confidant and ally. And, like any man would be expected to, he falls a bit in love!

The film won a Golden Globe last Sunday (15th) when Michelle Williams took home the award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Monroe, an award that Monroe herself won in 1960 for her iconic role in Some Like It Hot.

My Week with Marilyn is our First Monday presentation for February. Come and watch the magic happen on the big screen.
