A83 Art Exhibition by Maureen Finn

Commencing this Saturday (9th August) for two weeks, Glengyle Distillery will host an exhibition of new paintings by local lass Maureen Finn. The title of the exhibition will be ‘The A83’ and the paintings which will be on display have been born from many decades of observing and recalling the snake-like contours of the A83. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to go on their own journey, make their own version of the trip down the A83, blended with their own memories and feelings, their own times of elation or sadness. The paintings evoke the complexity and richness of this long and intricate road, inspired by intimate first-hand knowledge. Maureen creates tough and challenging paintings which, if we spend time looking hard at them, give off a great sense of satisfaction and fulfilment –echoing, we might say, the very feeling we get after having travelled the A83 itself to arrive safely home.

Maureen Finn was born in Campbeltown and graduated from Glasgow School of Art with an honours degree in painting.  Group and solo exhibitions soon followed at the  Compass Gallery, Art from the Billiard Room, Langside Gallery (all Glasgow) and Flying Colours and Mercury Gallery in Edinburgh.  This year she was selected for the Society of Scottish Artists Open Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Maureen has paintings in several public and private collections including the BBC and Art in Hospitals.  Much of Maureen’s early work was inspired by growing up in Campbeltown, within a fishing family, with boats, sea scenes and flying birds predominating.  More recently she has been looking at the familiar landscapes and road views that lead from the central belt down to Kintyre.

The exhibition begins on Saturday 9th August from 10.00am -4.00pm and will run until Saturday 23rd August 2014 (except Sundays). The venue will be the Filling Store at Glengyle Distillery, Glengyle Road, Campbeltown. If any paintings are sold during the exhibition, a percentage of all profits from the sales will be donated to Campbeltown Grammar School’s Art Department to encourage young artists to paint and exhibit in the future.

The exhibition has been supported by Explore Campbeltown and organisers would like to thank all their food and drink producers for supporting this exhibition and also the local volunteers who will staff the exhibition.
