Kintyre Songwriters Festival Friday 24th - Sunday 26th May

Postby StephenJ » Fri Apr 05, 2013 8:12 pm

The Kintyre Songwriters Festival is fast gaining a national reputation as the place to see the stars of tomorrow in an intimate setting. With top-class guest performers alongside a showcase of even more local talent than ever before, the 6th annual festival promises to be the best yet.

The idea for the festival came from local singer-songwriters Ross Macinnes and the late Kennth Gilchrist. Kenneth tragically died while organising the first festival and the local musical community rallied round to make sure his vision came to fruition.
With previous years being a sellout success, the festival has grown each year, both in the number of local performers and the stature of the guest artists.

Friday night from 8pm is rock night in Whisky Macs with an incredible 9 local bands all playing original material including A New Hope, The Twisted Melons and Violent Echo plus newcomers Sleeping With The Enemy.

Saturday afternoon is the acoustic open stage, open to all performers and featuring many of the festival artists.

The Saturday showcase from 7pm is headlined by top emerging Scottish folk singer Rachel Sermanni, fresh from a headline appearance on BBC Hogmanay Live 2012 and tours with Mumford and Sons, John Grant and Elvis Costello. She is joined by Kenyan-born, Glasgow-based singer/songwriter Genesee (winner of Celtic Connections Danny Kyle open stage 2013) and country-tinged artist Kerri Watt who is fitting in Campbeltown between performances in Los Angeles and London.

Also appearing on what is sure to be a memorable night are many popular local artists including Davy Robertson and Alex McAllister, Violent Echo, fuji above the lightning and The Gilchristians, in their first local appearance since supporting The Saw Doctors in the Victoria Hall.

Sunday afternoon will see a seminar on live bookings and music promotion at the White Hart.

On Sunday evening, another top class talent will come to perform in Campbeltown with a headline performance from Emma's Imagination (winner of Sky 1's Must Be The Music). With two recent top 10 hits under her belt, Emma is one of the the UK's top solo acoustic performers. Also appearing is Colin Train (ex-Follow That Camel), a regular at Celtic Connections who is also very much looking forward to performing in the town again.

Local artists include Adam Fortune, in his first local show following his EP launch, The Twisted Melons, Gullion, Colin Campbell and Rhiann Middleton. Supergroup Tales From Space will follow up their local Hogmanay performance with their traditional singalong to close the festival.

Tickets for the Saturday and Sunday showcases are available from The White Hart and from http://www.ticketweb.co.uk from 9am on Saturday 6th April, priced at £15 each.

Sorry for lack of promoting the festival on our part but not intentional and the idea of the forum was always to allow others to pomote events etc that are going on so many thanks Stephen for posting.

Just looking at the line up - and it is brilliant. Well done to everyone involved and best wishes for the 2013 festival

2013 Artists

Rachel Sermanni

21-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter Rachel Sermanni consolidates her growing reputation as one of folk's bright new things with her debut album "Under Mountains", recently released on our own Middle of Nowhere Recordings. Rachel launched her foray into the world of singer-songwriting when only 17, and has since played in excess of 400 shows across the UK, Europe and a handful of shows in the US and Asia.

Highlights in Rachels career to date have included:

Supporting Mumford & Sons on tour shortly after they won Best Album at the BRITS
Supporting John Grant and Newton Faulkner on tours, resulting in Rachel dueting with both artists on shows
Recording the Bothy Sessions. A project where a text was sent out to invite musicians to join Rachel in a remote Highland shack, miles from the nearest road or civilisation, resulting in an EP which has long since sold out
Travelling to India to write, record and perform with Indian musicians Papon and legend Bikram Gosh
Self releasing her debut EP, Black Currents, which debuted at No 1 in the national Independent Singles Charts
Sales in excess of 1000 on the week of release of her debut album, debuting at No 2 in the Independent Breakers Album chart

Emma's Imagination

Emma Gillespie (born in Edinburgh, Scotland), better known by her stage name Emma's Imagination, is a Scottish singer. She first came to prominence after winning the Sky1 TV talent contest Must Be the Music. She has since been signed to Gary Barlow's music label Future Records. She has since released her debut solo album, Stand Still in January 2011. Early years: Emma Gillespie was born in Edinburgh and grew up in Dumfries. Gillespie took up playing guitar when aged 16. Before coming to public attention, she spent time busking on the streets of Glasgow, to which she had moved a year before her breakthrough. She also spent time honing her skills performing in New York. Emma's Imagination entered Must Be the Music, broadcast on Sky1 and Sky1 HD. In the initial televised audition phase, as well as the three semi-finals and final, contestants sang in front of the judges, Jamie Cullum, Dizzee Rascal, and Sharleen Spiteri. The auditions took place in early August 2010 with musicians allowed to play their own compositions. The live finals were held at Wembley Arena with a live audience behind the judges. During the finals, the public voted for their favourite act, which was Emma's Imagination. After appearing on the show, her first single, This Day, was released for sale by download and debuted at number 10 on the United Kingdom Singles Chart and number 2 on the Indie Chart. The single also charted on the Irish Singles Chart, where it reached number 9 and on the Scottish Singles Chart, where it debuted at number 7.

Genesee

Kenyan singer-songwriter, recipient of Danny Kyle Award 2013 with an album due for release in summer 2013. Influences range from Odetta and Paul Simon to Alex Chilton, Franco and the great, grey city of Glasgow.

Kerri Watt

Scottish Singer-songwriter Kerri Watt is bursting on to the UK music scene thanks to a strong and soulful voice combined with classic storytelling lyrics. Her music is inspired by folk, blues, soul and country and her heartfelt words are anchored in the timeless traditions of narrative songs. A regular performer around Glasgows popular venues, Kerri has impressed twice at King Tuts, pleasing her loyal following of supporters with her, "Soulful voice, memorable melodies and unique stage presence."

Kerri recently returned from touring in Los Angeles, where she performed at some of the city's most famous venues, including Whisky A Go-Go and The Hotel Cafe. She was invited back to play the Whisky for a second time after mesmerizing the audience with her unique tone and stage presence. Before leaving the States, Kerri filmed a music video for her song, "California Heart" in a classic West Coast setting. Days after returning to the UK, she released the video online on Valentines Day. Scottish radio DJ, Jim Gellatly picked it up after the rate of viewers quickly grew over 48 hours, and played it that weekend on his In:Demand show on Amazing radio. Now back in the UK, inspired by her trip, Kerri is preparing to tour the country and launch her debut EP later this year.

The Gilchristians

The Gilchristians formed in 2008 to play the music of Kenneth Campbell Gilchrist, who tragically died the same year. The ever-changing lineup means that no two performances are the same.

The band have made appearances at The Kintyre Songwriters Festival, closing the Saturday nights in style, and they also supported The Saw Doctors in 2012.

Adam Fortune

Adam Fortune is a 24 year old singer songwriter who is based in Glasgow but whose heart belongs in Kintyre. Already a seasoned performer, Adam offers songs that tug at the heartstrings and takes his cue from influences including Donovan, Jeff Buckley, the Waterboys and Led Zeppelin, amongst countless others.

2013 will be his 6th Songwriter's Festival, and he still has the same enthusiasm for playing to a Campbeltown crowd as he did at the first festival in 2008. You can pick up a copy of his recent EP 'The Kelpie' this weekend

Violent Echo

Violent Echo are a Scottish rock band formed in 2002. The group consists of Jamie Leask (drums) Iain Maclean (lead guitar, backing vocals) Andrew Martin (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), and David Wood (bass guitar, backing vocals).

Having played great headline and supporting slots at numerous large events, the band have developed a reputation for delivering a show that will have the crowd wanting more at the end of the night. Their explosive energy and stage presence is paired with their passion for delivering an unforgettable show.

The Ecka made their first appearance at the KSF in 2012, playing original material for the first time in their history. They followed this by releasing their first studio recording: Plan. The band are preparing new material for this year's KSF, and are looking forward to their return to this much loved festival!

Megan Hill

Megan Hill is currently in her final term at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) in Glasgow, studying secondary music education.

Inspired artists include Karine Polwart, Katie Melua and Kate Busby.

Megan is a regular at the Kintyre Songwriters Festival, and has previously performed sets with a variety of other songwriters, including Adam Fortune.

She also performed in front of hundreds when she was part of the Slainte Davaar Allstars, a group comprising of just about every Campbeltown musician on one stage!

The Wild Sarachs

This will be the first performance by the Sarachs for more than two years so absolutely no pressure! Many of the songs come from the twisted imagination of Les Oman but require the necessary Sarachy arrangements, humour and cynicism of Anne Leith, Kristy and Alex Johnson to bring out there true character. Besides, Les would rather hear Anne singing than have to listen to his own voice. It is unlikely that he is alone in this regard!

It will be an emotional experience for the four of them to perform at KSF once again and expectations are running high... so much so that by the end of their set, it is unlikely that there will be a dry leg in the place.

Craig Bedson

Craig Bedson has always been a Campbeltown boy at the bottom of his bandaged up heart but the lure of the bright lights and late nights of the city has proved too tempting.

He wrote his first song at the tender age of twelve and has barely stopped for breath since!

A reluctant front man, Craig has plans to step back to the comfort of backing vocals and guitar duties and to "leave the singing stuff to someone with a bit more natural flair".

Who knows what the future holds but for now, he is anxious to get back into the unrivaled atmosphere and hospitality of the Kintyre Songwriters Festival and share a little more of his world with the people that mean the most to him, after all "...home will always be the bottom end of the '83..."

The Shift

Same Shift, Different Day

The Twisted Melons

Comprised of the three Johnson brothers, The Twisted Melons have an uncanny sibling musical telepathy that makes every show a one-off. Moving effortlessly between psychedelic hard rock, folk, pop, funk, fusion and electronica, the band recall the great bands of the past while moving towards the future along their own path.

FujiAboveTheLightning

A festival regular, Les Moffat returns this year a little bit older, a little bit wiser and a little bit more pretentious with his new project FujiAboveTheLightning.

Inspired by recent personal events his debut EP "Pieces" is scheduled for release later this year with live performances to follow.

Gullion

Back in 2008, a crack team of renegade musicians (Christophe Adie, Robert Black) were sentenced to life imprisonment by a musical court for a crime they did not commit. They duly escaped from a maximum security lock-in at the Kilbrannan to the Kintyre underground.

Still wanted by the government, citing influences from every decade since music has been recorded, they now thrive as musicians of fortune. If you have a problem, If no-one else can help and if you can find them, maybe you can hear GULLION!

Sleeping With The Enemy

Named for the fact that only the enemy will have them, this rabble bonded over blood, sweat and tears. Alas, as the blood is familial and not shared intravenously, this negates the cliched rock star adage of sex, drugs and rock n' roll.

The sweat is due to the fact that the drummer won't stop playing even when the song is finished and the tears came during repeated communal viewings of the moment when Wilson the Volleyball floats away in Dreamworks' Cast Away, (the band are open to sponsorship and/or free DVDs).

Musically the sole aim is to induce haemorrhoids, so it may be best to come prepared with some H-Care cream, but the band will be selling their own brand after gigs should anyone require it.

Rhiann Middleton

Rhiann is a 19 year old musician from Campbeltown. She has been musical from a young age and was a member of Kintyre Schools Pipe Band and Sound of Kintyre Pipe Band for many years as a piper. This is her first Kintyre Songwriters Festival and first official time performing as a singer songwriter. Her main influences for song writing are artists including Gabrielle Aplin, Ben Howard, Nina Nesbitt and Benjamin Leftwich but she also listens to bands such as Oasis, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Black Keys and The Beatles.

Bob Ross Appreciation Society

Bob Ross Appreciation Society are a band...
"Talk to the tree, make friends with it" - Bob Ross, The Joy of Painting

David Fee / Dodgy Hip

David Fee is a Campbeltown based singer-songwriter who allegedly has this quiet/loud thing going on when he plays live. His songs come in both fast and slow varieties, and consider themselves to have failed if they do not engage some kind of mind wrenching emotion in the listener. "Hmm, that was quite nice" counts as a mind wrenching emotion on some occasions. Fee releases a newly recorded original song every Fourth of the month at www.feetunes.com.

Remember, Fee Comes Fourth. It's a kind of calling.

The Dodgy Hip are a band. At least in the imagination of frontman Fee. The Hip, as they are widely known, have rocked the house on many an occasion. Hopefully one day the neighbours will complain. In the meantime don't miss the chance to see this iconic foursome (Threesome? Twosome? Onesome?) while you can.

Colin Train

Colin Train is a Scottish singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist. Since Col launched his debut solo album "Days for the Driven" (2008), he has enjoyed UK Nation Wide album distribution & performing as far from home as Shanghai & Montreal. Currently promoting his second album "Supertune"; "Train does much for the box's (accordion) rehab, whilst proving that he's no slouch in the horizontal ebony & ivory arts when he moves to Hammond & Fender Rhodes... The songs themselves are painstakingly crafted & always passionately delivered". R2 (RocknReel)

Live shows take Col's music to a new level. Joined on stage with song writing partner & twin brother Alan Train, the Train brother's harmonies are an integral part of their vibrant stage performances. Their music draws many influences from fellow Lanarkshire songwriting legend John Martyn to the U.S roots of Darrell Scott to more celtic landscapes of Paul Brady.

For further information & music videos visit: www.colintrain.com. Colin will be joined by his band; consisting of Alan Train on guitar & vocals, Kenny Hutchison on double bass & Stevie Fivey on percussion.
