Creggan wind farm open day

Postby SKDT » Sun Jan 22, 2012 1:35 pm

The South Kintyre Development Trust (SKDT) received the following communication from Burcote Wind on the 18th January. We would encourage anyone interested in the development to attend the open day to find out more or get in touch with Burcote Wind directly. Details are below:

You may already be aware of recently announced proposals from Burcote Wind for Creggan wind farm, located on a site north-east of Glenbarr in West Kintyre.

Comprising 26 turbines and with a total installed capacity of 78 megawatts, the Creggan wind farm proposal has the potential to generate sufficient electricity to power 58,000 homes and would offset almost 118,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

As currently proposed, the project would also be accompanied by a community benefit fund worth £234,000 per year or £5.9 million over its 25-year lifetime, with each megawatt of installed capacity providing £3000 per year of guaranteed income during that period.

We’re still a long way from submitting a planning application. But we’re starting our engagement with the local community now so that we can take on board the views of local people and refine our proposals where possible. We are holding a community engagement event in February where you’ll have the chance to view an exhibition of our proposals, chat to the project team and give us your comments and feedback.

The event will take place at the following date, time and venue and we would welcome your attendance:

Thursday, 23rd February, 2012 – Glenbarr Church Hall, Glenbarr, West Kintyre, 14:00-19:30

For your information, please find enclosed a community newsletter with further information about the project. I applaud the developers for arranging this open day and having an informative approach re their website and Newsletters. This development is however of importance to ALL the folk of Kintyre as the westerly half of this development is not tucked away on the spinal uplands, it immediately abutts the A83 just at the school at Glenbarr and all 25 proposed 125m turbines will be readily viewable from the A83 road .....the first two turbines are only about 800m from it according to the indicative layout and not much further from the school itself. There are also five turbines within 2km of Glenbarr Village and thus within the SPP6 legislation that indicates such developments should not be in this zone where they pose a significant long term detrimental impact on the nearby dwelling.
This meeting is an excellent opportunity for both the local and wider community to form an opinion on the level of that detrimental impact vs benefit, I hope it is well attended.

Just wanted to convey some information I was given today - a reliable source told me they had spoken to someone at Burcote Wind, who said that the meeting in Glenbarr Hall is now only on until 5:30pm, instead of 7:30pm. I'm not sure if this is, in fact, correct, but I thought I better pass on what I'd heard!
