Things to do in London

Postby Govangirl » Sun Nov 16, 2008 1:53 am

I've just had a great day in London as a result of an earlier Anniversary present. Eight of us went to Vinopolis. It's a wine tour and tasting. You can taste different wines, rums, absinthes, champagnes, beers and whiskies and also a Bombay Sapphire cocktail. The shop at the end had the largest collection of whiskies I've ever seen. It was a real laugh and I learned a lot too. A very enjoyable way to spend four hours!
I don't drink beer, rum or whisky so I swapped my vouchers with Mr Govangirl. I've got a headache now to beat any other I've ever had and the hubby is at the moment lying on the lounge floor cuddling my dog that normally he wouldn't even look at!

I swear we must live in a parallel universe, Govan. I went to a party last night in which I drank wine, champagne, absinthe and Bombay Sapphire cocktails.. we never drink Bombay Sapphire, always Tanqueray, and its the first time in a year I had absinthe.. How bizarre is it that we were drinking the same combination of stuff on the same day? I also did not drink beer, rum, or whiskey, which were also flowing

If you tell me you were drinking Castle Rock Pinot Noir I'll fall off my chair.

Bizarre indeed Bobbie! I may very well have drunk Castle Rock but after a few tastings I swear that one Pinot Noir just hazed into another Chardonnay. In the end, I just blindly pointed to a bottle and threw my voucher nonchalantly into the air. You could tell by my tasting notebook that they gave us: it was all written out so intelligently in beautiful cursive script for the first three wines then it goes rapidly downhill until it just says 'Oh f*** it' across the page and even the spelling was wrong :!: Thing is, I'm not good at all with alcohol and can get really drunk on 2 glasses of wine.

As for the Bombay Sapphire, I don't drink spirits (unless they're in a margarita) but the cocktails made with it were superb so I'll have to get a bottle.

First time I had tasted it - vile, vile stuff, like drinking petrol!

I'm sorry, Govangirl.

Vinopolis, I quite fancy the burns night (never been to one). It sounds that you all had a great time.
I had a couple of glasses of wine last week (Two), the first wine in years - no beer in the house - it went straight to my head.

For what, for goodness sake? We were having a laugh, no need to apologise. You stick to your petrol and I'll stick to wine  We could have a real cheap evening out on one bottle of Eldorado, we two!

And never been to a Burns Night? I never miss them! Now I have a bar in my house, we have one every year, piper and all. I have to say the Vinopolis one is a bit steep though!!!!!

Went to Hyde Park yesterday for their Winter Wonderland. It was quite good but my daughter and her friend really LOVED it! There are sideshows, a Christmas Market (got some nice foodstuffs) a Big Wheel, and a skating rink. We had to book for the skating in advance but I saw people just booking there. If you're in London before Christmas, I'd recommend it.

I stayed in London for a few years and there is plenty to do. There are a few parks which are fantastic- Hyde Park for one and a visit on a Sunday there to Speakers Corner is a laugh-carry on round the Serpentine and have a nice rest while watching the world go by outside one of the cafes. Kensington Park is another lovely place, and also Regents Park. A day trip to Richmond is great or Greenwich. There are plenty of reasonably priced restaurants in London to suit all tastes and budgets. The museums are really interesting. Bayswater has a nice indoor shopping centre called Whiteleys, and Paddington station has a lovely bar upstairs and from Paddington you can wander down Edgware Road and try out the mouth watering Arabic restaurants ending up at Marble Arch and shop until you drop on Oxford Street.
