George retains the Machrihanish Golf Club Championship
The last 2 weekends at Machrihanish Golf Club have been focussed on the Club Championship competition which is played over 4 rounds. Conditions have been good over the period of the Championship which lets the competitors battle it out between each other and the course, rather than the difficulties that can be thrown into the mix with the changeable Machrihanish weather.
In comparison to last year, which was decided by a further play-off, this year was decided conclusively on the final day. After last week there was nothing to separate the two front runners, George McMillan and Bobby Willan, who both had cumulative scores of 140 after the first 2 rounds.
However, rounds 3 and 4 proved to be where the Championship was won with George coming in with another 69 in the 3rd round that opened up a 6 stroke lead on Bobby going into the final 18.
The current Club Champion’s form was relentless in the 4th round too, as he stretched his lead beyond reach, sitting 5 under par as he stepped onto the 12th tee. Finishing the competition with a 67, George retains the prestigious title of Club Champion at the Machrihanish Golf Club.
Bobby Willan secured second place, along with notable performances from Stephen Kelly and Stuart Campbell who took 3rd and 4th places respectively.
The full results are:
G MacMillan 71+69+69+67=276
Bobby Willan 70+70+75+73=288
Stephen Kelly 72+73+76+71=292
S A Campbell 78+75+79+71=303
In the Senior section of the Club Championship, Hector Thomson takes the title by the narrowest of margins,(BIH), from nearest rival, Duncan Johnstone.
The Bob Ballantyne prize for best cumulative nett score over the 3rd and 4th rounds goes to M Howat with 70+69=139, and local man, David Rankin took second place after finishing the day in style with a nett 65 in his final round to trail by 1 stroke.
Upcoming events at the Machrihanish Golf Club include the Erskine Shield on Saturday, (tomorrow), which is in aid of the Erskine Hospital. A fundraising raffle boasts some super prizes including return flights to Glasgow, £100 meal voucher, holiday vouchers and many others. Tickets can be purchased in the Clubhouse from any of the bar staff.
Also the inaugural Shepherds Cross 4 Man Texas scramble will take place on the 25th, July, 2010. This competition will be in a unique format where 9 holes will be played at Machrihanish Dunes and 9 holes at Machrihanish Golf Club. The day will conclude with a meal and prize giving. Availability is limited, however additional times up to 3.00pm have been allocated for any members who still wish to take part.
