JIMMY KERRY MEMORIAL TROPHY - 1st August 2009

Conditions at the Machrihanish Golf Club on Saturday 1st August were reflected in the scores returned as high winds proved too much for many competitors. No fewer than 45 out of a total of 114 playing failed to return a card and there were many disasters along the way. Sunday would have been a good day to go ball hunting.
The prize reflected the fact that conditions were more suited to lower handicap golfers with all the winners in the gents section having single figure handicaps.
Winner of the trophy was G Menzies with halves of 36 and 41 resulting in an excellent 77-7=70 to win by one stroke. Helped by great birdies at 13 and 17 Graham Anderson warmed up for the defence of the Winter League title claiming 2nd place on 80-9=71, again a super score, and in third place was Ian McAllister, despite three double bogies and a triple bogey, with 79-6=73.
To fit in with travel arrangements for a County match Club Champion George McMillan ran round in just over two hours scoring 75 to claim first prize before heading off to Millport. Next week George is paired with Usain Bolt! Second place by virtue of the better inward half was D Rainey 77 and in third place Stuart Campbell.

Armour retains John McLean Trophy - 23rd August 2009

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Sun Sep 20, 2009 6:24 pm

Armour retains John McLean Trophy - 23rd August 2009

Oliver Armour coped best with the wicked conditions on Sunday 23rd August to retain one of the premier trophies at the Machrihanish Golf Club, the John McLean trophy.
Played over 36 holes, with the winner being the best Scratch score over the two rounds, there were a host of good scores recorded under perfect conditions on the Saturday.
Leading the way was Club Captain Stephen Kelly on 70 closely followed by Club Champion George McMillan and Lee Mathieson on 71 and OIiver on 72. John McV McPhee returned the best net score of the day, a great 73-8=65, that despite a six at the last.
The Sunday was a different day altogether with the brutal conditions tackled by only seventeen players!! Several were blown off course completely in the afternoon including Stephen and Lee leaving Oliver and George to battle it out. In the end Oliver’s birdie at the seventeenth proved crucial and saw him return a 76, two round total of 148, and edge out George by a single stroke.
In the handicap section Ian McLennan (Snr) with an excellent 84-12=72 in the conditions saw off the opposition whilst mention should be made of Willie McKerral in the Senior’s section who went where many younger members wouldn’t go and bravely completed the 36 holes to claim the senior prize.

Coronation Cup and Lyle Barr Quaich - Sat/Sun 29/30 August 2

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Sun Sep 20, 2009 6:26 pm

Machrihanish Golf Club - Results Sat / Sun 29/30 Aug

CORONATION CUP

Saturday 29th August saw the Coronation Cup, a competition played against bogey, being held at The Machrihanish Golf Club. On a day of very heavy showers Andrew Anderson led the way with a very creditable score of +3 to see off David Wilkinson’s +1. Whilst Andrew scored steadily, getting points on every hole, Davy had a couple of blank holes which proved the difference. Third place went to Graham Husband, by virute of the better inward half, who ended up on level. Tommy Newlands took the senior prize with John Shaw claiming the junior prize.
There were 61 competitors played, 9 two’s recorded and the fourteenth being the hardest hole at 1.89 shots over par.

KEYTE WINS LYLE BARR QUAICH

Having been postponed due to flooding a couple of weeks ago the rescheduled date for the Lyle Barr Quaich was a day of ideal scoring conditions. With the course in excellent condition, and the greens running fast, it was Ian Keyte who saw off all comers on Sunday 30th August to win the trophy. An excellent round of 75-7 = 67, compiled with a string of very steady figures saw Ian win by stroke from Ian McLennan(Snr), Ian’s seven at the seventeenth proving expensive. Also left ruing a disappointing finish was Iain McAllister who was under par until suffering a triple bogey at the fourteenth and a double bogey at the seventeenth in claiming 3rd place, also with 69.
Club champion George McMillan won the lowest gross prize with 72, including five birdies, as well as the long drive drive prize at the first. Willie McKerral again claimed the Senior prize with a fine net 69(despite being held up on the front nine!) and John Shaw won both the junior prize with 97-10=87 and the junior long drive.
57 competitors payed with 12 two’s being scored and the fourteenth hole again proving the hardest at 1.74 over par.
Footnote - Past Captain Jim Innis didn’t quite manage to emulate the current captain with a hole in one but on his recent visit to the well know Celtic Manor Resort his super long iron tee shot on the par three eleventh, a notoriously difficult hole, was of such quality it won him a complimentary tee time for four. Well done Jim!

Competitors were glad to see the conditions improve drastically for the second round on Thursday with only light winds to contend with, and it was Craig Colville who took top spot with a 77-10=67 on Day 2.

2010 AM AM Golf Results from Machrihanish Golf Club

Postby Sport » Thu May 06, 2010 7:02 pm

Machrihanish Golf Club 2010 Am Am

Saturday 1st, May saw 43 teams take part in the Machrihanish Am Am competition including 2 teams from the main sponsor, Argyll Buildbase. The event was very well organised with a selection of prizes to play for at all 18 holes in addition to the main competition honours.

The bar was set high early in the day by the Insubiz team headed up by Soren Hundeball, who collectively racked up several net eagles that ultimately contributed to a great score of 53 which was always going to be the score to beat, and must have put many of the later teams at a psychological disadvantage even before they had stepped up to the first tee.

Iain Reid’s, Argyll and Bute Consultants team were hopeful of finishing in the prizes with a 57 despite an average inward half which could have been worse if it were not for Terry Mundie finding his clinical putting form that we have been so used to seeing in the Winter League!

However, it was David Rankin’s, Papa and the 3 Bears who mounted the best challenge to the leaders who were next in with a 56 to take second place followed by the Largieside team in 3rd place by virtue of a better inward half.

The evenings prize giving took place in a packed clubhouse hosted by Club Captain, Bob Tait and prizes kindly presented to the winners by Dorothy Tait.

Results:

1. Insubiz 53 (S Hundeball, B Findlay Snr, O Morgan, A McLean)
2. Papa & 3 Bears 56 (D Rankin, J McLean, D Galbraith, S Gorman)
3. Largieside 57 (J Rennie, D Johnstone, I Johnstone, M McNeill)
4. Argyll & Bute
Consultants 57 (I Reid, B Colville, J W McCallum, T Mundie)
5. D Wilknson 58 (D Wilkinson, M Hall, T Martin, B McNeillie)

Bob Tait thanked Argyll Buildbase for their support in the event and Graeme Sproat from the local branch of Buildbase expressed his thanks to the Club for the opportunity to be associated with Machrihanish Golf Club and the Am Am event.

Sat 24th April 2010 - Craig takes the Captains Prize

Saturday 24th April saw the Machrihanish Golf Club’s Captains Prize being fought out in very challenging conditions, resulting in over a quarter of competitors with Non Returns!

It was the better inward half that secured victory for Craig Martin (79-9=70), despite a shaky start with a triple bogey at the first hole, however his form returned after a birdie at the 3rd which was followed by another 5 pars before the turn.

In second place Gavin Brown (76-6=70), had an excellent round with 2 birdies and 9 pars, but double bogeys at the 13th, 14th and 15th proved to be the difference between the two players on the day.

Ian McLeod took 3rd place with (80-9=71) and Bobby Willan had the lowest gross score of 75.

This week has seen the return of the Golf Festival Week which has been well supported, and kicked off on Sunday with a welcome from the Club Captain, Bob Tait, and followed by a whisky tasting courtesy of Jura Distillery.

43 teams will take to the course on Saturday (tomorrow) for the Machrihanish Am Am competition which has been sponsored by Argyll Buildbase.

Saturday 15th May 2010 - Machrihanish Golf Club Charity Open

Saturday 15th May attracted 114 competitors to Machrihanish Golf Club to compete in a Charity Open in support of Macmillan Cancer Support and Children 1st.

48 visiting players took part in the event, however it was the home club members that made the most of the favourable playing conditions to take the honours.

Brian Deans started the morning proceedings with an impressive (81-17=64) which was sufficient to secure top spot along with a long overdue 2 stroke handicap cut. It was Brian’s outward half form that contributed most to his win which started at the 3rd with a birdie and then finished the front nine with 5 pars in a row.

R Brown took a well deserved second place with a (83-17=66) followed by Hector Thomson in 3rd place with a (76-7=69) which matched the lowest gross score of the day.

Machrihanish Golf Club are delighted to report that the event raised £500 for each charity with the raffle raising an additional £350, and the Club would also like to thank all members and visitors for their participation.

Machrihanish Golf Club Updates

Erskine Shield

On Saturday 19th June Machrihanish G C raised over £1,200 on behalf of Erskine Hospital by hosting a competition and raffle. The huge success of the event was largely due to the efforts of Club Steward, Iain McLean and the many businesses and individuals that donated raffle prizes.

On the course it was a count-back that separated the top five players who all finished with a nett 71.

Hector Thomson was the eventual winner with an 87-16=71, followed by Colin Lang and Charles McIntyre in second and third spot.

The best scratch score was from Donald Johnstone, and the junior category was won by David Conner.

64 players took part and the course analysis recorded 33 birdies on the day and a rare Eagle on the 18th from Craig Colville.

June Medal

Wednesday 23rd June saw the June Medal played in a Stableford format.

Results: 1st Gavin Brown 38 points
2nd Calum Fraser 35 points
3rd Lee Mathieson 34 points

Coronation Cup

Last Saturday the Coronation Cup Bogey Competition was played at Machrihanish Golf Club. The windy conditions made play difficult especially in the back nine, however this did not deter a few course veterans who finished the day two up on the course.

Calum McLean’s better inward nine proved to be the deciding factor in the placings, with Tommy Newlands and Colin Lang taking second and third place respectively.

This Saturday, 3rd July is the Thomson Open at Machrihanish Golf Club.

The J Scally prize for best cumulative nett score over the 2 days went to John Shaw, with Mickey MacNeill of Tarbert taking second place.

George retains the Machrihanish Golf Club Championship

The last 2 weekends at Machrihanish Golf Club have been focussed on the Club Championship competition which is played over 4 rounds. Conditions have been good over the period of the Championship which lets the competitors battle it out between each other and the course, rather than the difficulties that can be thrown into the mix with the changeable Machrihanish weather.

In comparison to last year, which was decided by a further play-off, this year was decided conclusively on the final day. After last week there was nothing to separate the two front runners, George McMillan and Bobby Willan, who both had cumulative scores of 140 after the first 2 rounds.

However, rounds 3 and 4 proved to be where the Championship was won with George coming in with another 69 in the 3rd round that opened up a 6 stroke lead on Bobby going into the final 18.

The current Club Champion’s form was relentless in the 4th round too, as he stretched his lead beyond reach, sitting 5 under par as he stepped onto the 12th tee. Finishing the competition with a 67, George retains the prestigious title of Club Champion at the Machrihanish Golf Club.

Bobby Willan secured second place, along with notable performances from Stephen Kelly and Stuart Campbell who took 3rd and 4th places respectively.

The full results are:

G MacMillan 71+69+69+67=276
Bobby Willan 70+70+75+73=288
Stephen Kelly 72+73+76+71=292
S A Campbell 78+75+79+71=303

In the Senior section of the Club Championship, Hector Thomson takes the title by the narrowest of margins,(BIH), from nearest rival, Duncan Johnstone.

The Bob Ballantyne prize for best cumulative nett score over the 3rd and 4th rounds goes to M Howat with 70+69=139, and local man, David Rankin took second place after finishing the day in style with a nett 65 in his final round to trail by 1 stroke.

Upcoming events at the Machrihanish Golf Club include the Erskine Shield on Saturday, (tomorrow), which is in aid of the Erskine Hospital. A fundraising raffle boasts some super prizes including return flights to Glasgow, £100 meal voucher, holiday vouchers and many others. Tickets can be purchased in the Clubhouse from any of the bar staff.

Also the inaugural Shepherds Cross 4 Man Texas scramble will take place on the 25th, July, 2010. This competition will be in a unique format where 9 holes will be played at Machrihanish Dunes and 9 holes at Machrihanish Golf Club. The day will conclude with a meal and prize giving. Availability is limited, however additional times up to 3.00pm have been allocated for any members who still wish to take part.

MGC - Shepherds Cross Tournament

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:31 am

Shepherds Cross Tournament

Last Sunday saw the inaugural Shepherds Cross Tournament being played at the Machrihanish Golf Club and the Machrihanish Dunes. The format was a four man Texas scramble with the added feature of playing the familiar front nine at Machrihanish before crossing onto Machrihanish Dunes to play a selection of holes there to complete the round.

Both courses are in great condition benefiting from much needed recent rainfall, and the feedback from players was very positive, particularly in respect of the immaculate greens at Machrihanish Dunes.

As well as the main prizes there were a number of team and individual prizes to play for on the way round.

The day finished off with a buffet and presentation at Machrihanish Golf Club where it was intimated that the event may be scaled up to a 36 hole event for next year.

The winners were Greg Watson, Revie Thomson, David Graham and R Ofinoff with a net score of 53.5 followed by D Johnston, I McAlister, I Johnstone and P McLean with a net 54.8.
Third spot was secured with a 56.5 by K Anderson, H Thomson, Ivor Watson and R Mitchell.

In other recent events at Machrihanish Golf Club it has been Brian Findlay Jnr who has continued his good form to win the July Open back to back with the Lachlan McKinnon Stableford last week.

July Open results are Brian Findlay Jnr (71-4=67), E Capocci (73-5=68), S A Campbell (69-1=68) which was also the lowest gross score.

L McKinnon Stableford: B Findlay Jnr 39, David Graham 37, George McMillan 36

Jimmy Kerr Open

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:32 am

Jimmy Kerr Open

Machrihanish Golf Club hosted 125 competitors last Saturday for the Jimmy Kerr Open in mainly dry, but increasingly windy conditions. Some very good scores were returned including David Graham with a round of 13 pars and 3 birdies to finish with (69-2=67), which secured third place.

Ian McLennan was in contention early in the day with a (77-11=66), following a very steady inward nine to take a well deserved second place.

Earlier in the week the focus at Machrihanish Golf Club had been on Hugh Grants visit to play the course, however getting back to another seasoned performer, it was C D Stewart who took first place with an excellent (75-10=65). Stewart finished what was already a solid round with a birdie at the 18th before lighting up the victory cigar!

The junior winner was G McKillop Jnr, and the Senior prize went to D Johnson.

Open competition continues this Saturday at the Machrihanish Golf Club with the Rotary Open.

Machrihanish Golf Club Round Up

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:33 am

Machrihanish Golf Club Round Up

It has been a busy fortnight at the Machrihanish Golf Club which included the Rotary Open, the Seniors Open and the semi-final stages of the McDiarmid Cup being played.

The Rotary Open on Saturday 14th August was a perfect day for some good scores with the conditions being calm and dry.

Hayden Chambers jumped ship for the day from his more familiar Machrihanish Dunes course, to card the lowest gross score of the competition with a 70, which consisted of 10 pars and 4 birdies.
Hayden’s decision to come out of golfing retirement proved to be a good one and his (70-5=65) was rewarded with securing second place.

Visiting player, Mr N Bowie was 3rd with (72-6=66).

The score of the day however, was from Owen Morgan who has been punching well above his current 12 handicap going by recent form, and proved this by returning a (74-12=62) to win by 3 clear strokes. Owen’s one over par outward set him up nicely to have a bit of room for error in the inward nine, however no such room was required with a further six pars to finish off a fantastic round.

In the senior section it was a familiar battle between Hector Thomson and Donald Johnson with both players coming in with a net 68, however Hector took the win on count back. G McKillop Jnr also had a net 68 to win the junior section.

Individual hole prizes were sponsored by Springbank, Argyll Hotel, Tesco, G Nugent, and Galbraith & Cochrane and the winners were as follows:

Nearest the pin at the 4th A Aitken
Ladies longest drive at the 17th S Hope
Men’s longest drive at the 17th D Forshaw
Nearest the pin in 2 at the 18th S Langan
A quantity of paint was won by an unnamed Committee member for the highest gross score.

Senior Open – Wed, 18th August

Last Wednesday saw a 123 strong field of players including 91 visiting players took part in the Senior Open. There were plenty prizes to play for within the various age categories as well as individual hole prizes.

Hector Thomson continued his top form from the Rotary Open with the lowest scratch score of 74.

In the handicap competition the placings were decided by count back with three players finishing with a net 66. The resulted in the winner being J Wrench with (89-23=66) followed by A Walker (76-10=66), both visitors to the course. Ken Greig took 3rd place with a (75-9=66) following a very steady round which included 10 pars and 2 birdies, however a disappointing double bogey on the 10th was perhaps what made all the difference in the final result.

During the days play, a hole in one was scored by Jim Patterson of Kilmarnock on the short par 3 at the 4th hole.

McDiarmid Cup Final Stages

Earlier in the year play began in the McDiarmid Cup which is match play knockout format based on full handicap difference.

On form Owen Morgan booked his place in the final recently following a hard fought semi-final against J W McCallum, however he goes into the final with a two stroke handicap reduction following his Rotary open success.

Last week the other semi was decided between Fergus Walker and Iain Reid in a tie that went to a sudden death play-off after neither player could maintain any real advantage over the 18 holes. It was Walker, the former shinty player that took the initiative in the play-off and will now meet Morgan in the final scheduled for September.

Playing partners, Reid and McCallum will now concentrate efforts on preparing for the defence of their Saturday Winter League title.

Lyle Barr Results

The Lyle Barr competition was played on Saturday, 21st August at Machrihanish Golf Club, which also doubled up as a qualifier for the Machrihanish Pro-Am team scheduled for 11th September.

Again conditions were dry, however the morning players had a brisk breeze on the inward nine to contend with before the wind dropped around lunchtime.

J Grant won the handicap section with a 66-0=66 to qualify for the Machrihanish Pro-Am team in division 1, and Willie McDonald qualified from division 2 with an (80-13=67) along with finishing runner up on the day.

John Shaw and David Campbell both returned 75-6=69, however Shaw took 3rd place by virtue of the better inward half.

The 3rd division qualifier was Willie Miller, who also won the senior section with 100-22=78.

D Johnson took the scratch prize with a 74 along with the longest drive at the first hole, and in the junior section Andrew Wallace deserved his win with an (84-14=70).
