Kings Park 1 Campbeltown Pupils 3Showing four changes from the last fixture, the McFadyen sponsored Pupils travelled to the superb facilities of Glasgow Green in the hope of a positive result to kick-start the club's season.
The Pupils settled quickly on a near perfect surface, showing intent by taking the game to Kings Park in the early stages of the match. The visitors lead-up play was attractive to watch, with Keith Mitchell particularly comfortable with ball to feet.
The Pupils grabbed the lead in the twenty-fifth minute of the match, Chris Thomson breaking clear to send a vicious daisy-cutter goalbound. The home goalkeeper could only parry the ball into the path of the incoming Paul Grumoli, who made no mistake with a clinical strike into the net.
The home goalkeeper proved to be something of an ace card for his side, the custodian's kicking from hand or dead ball a joy to watch. The Pupils defence found themselves in difficulty when trying to deal with the length of his kick, a partial clearance being vollied home in spectacular fashion by the 'Kings' number eight for the equaliser.
As the first half drew to a close, both teams could reflect on an evenly fought match that did not produce to many chances in front of goal.
Kings exerted more pressure in the second-half, although the the Pupils defence copped well with anything coming its way. The visitors regained the lead on the hour when Sean Grumoli stepped in to break up an attack. Striding forward, the central defender sent a great ball beyond the home side's defensive line, brother Gary Grumoli scoring with a fine angled drive beyond the advancing goalkeeper.
Kings Park were awarded a penalty when David Anderson was adjudged to have committed a foul in the box. The resultant kick was brilliantly saved by Graham Cook, who dived to his left to turn the ball away. The almighty scramble that folowed ended with the ball being cleared to safety as the visitors heaved a sigh of relief.
With eight minutes remaining the Pupils sealed the win, a quick break by Darren McGillvray resulting in the crucial third goal. The midfield playmaker sent a perfect pass to release Paul Grumoli on the right flank, who, taking the ball in his stride, sent an accurate ball across the box. A Gary Grumoli shot from six yards struck the crossbar, the rebound rammed home in convincing fashion by Ewan McIlroy to clinch the points.
The Pupils are at home on Saturday 24th October against West of Scotland Premier opposition Harmony Row. This 2nd round West of Scotland Cup tie kicks-off at 2pm and, will be played to a finish. Harmony Row will provide stiff competition, a club who numbers Sir Alex Ferguson as one of its ex-players.
