PUPILS TOPPLE HIGH-FLYING BUSBY

BUSBY 3 CAMPBELTOWN PUPILS 4

The Fadyen Contractors sponsored Pupils came from two goals down to secure an impressive victory against second top Busby at Overlea Park Clarkston last Saturday. Searching for consistency during a stop-start season, this was the result the club has been looking for to kick-start its recovery.

Playing reasonably well from the kick-off, the visitors were stunned to find themselves two behind in the first twenty-minutes of the game. Gary Grumoli had chance to put the visitors ahead early on, but his parting shot struck the post instead of the net. The home side opened the scoring in the 15th minute when a speculative ball across the face of goal was deflected into the net with Neil McKay rooted to the spot. Another setback followed when the ball was stabbed home from close-range with the Pupils defence appealing in vain for off-side, at this point things weren't going to plan.

To keep the game alive, it was crucially important that the next goal should come from the visitors, and, right on cue it arrived within minutes. A period of good possession ended with a Paul Grumoli lay-off, the incoming Grant Grant making no mistake with a well directed strike into the corner of the net in the 22nd minute.

Five minutes before half-time it was all square, a searching run and perfect cross to the back post by Ewan McIlroy was headed home by the effervescent Paul Grumoli.

The Pupils grabbed the lead for the first time in the match in the 54th minute and, once-more the damage was inflicted by Paul Grumoli. He drove forward from the mid-field to get on the end of a lay-off by Darren McGillvray, his parting shot a rocket from twenty-yards into the top corner of the net for the goal of the match.

A fourth goal followed in the 61st minute; however, on this occasion lady luck was wearing a Pupils jersey. An inswinging corner from McIlroy produced a scrammble inside the six yard box, the Busby defence inadvertantly turning the ball into its own net while attempting to clear.

The visitors were now in control of the match, although with the wind at its back the home side tried everything to retrieve the situation. The Pupils back four of Lorne Robertson, Mark Barret,Shaun Grumoli and Keith Mitchell held firm, and a late goal from Busby on the final whistle did little to change the final outcome. A special mention to Mark Davis for his unswerving cover of the back four throughout the match, a tireless performance but rewrding nevertheless.

The Pupils fielded three teenagers as substitutes late in the game, good experience for the future of Craig Robertson, DJ Johnstone and Greg Scally.

Good weekend for the Campbeltown teams with the Pupils drawing yesterday and winning today in a tough double header weekend and the Boys winning 3-2 away to Celtic.

All three Kintyre sides end their season with away games this Saturday.

22nd May 2010
Premier 1 Eaglesham v Campbeltown Pupils 14:00 James Pearson
Premier 2 Port Glasgow OBU v Campbeltown Boys 14:00 Don Flanagan
Premier 2 Rutherglen v Tarbert 14:00 Derek Milton

On another note, congratulations to Oban Saints who won the SAFL Premier League yesterday.

DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND
SATURDAY 15th May - Campbeltown Pupils 2 Duncanrigg 2
SUNDAY 16th May - Carlton YMCA 3 Campbeltown Pupils 4

Four points out of six made this weekend the most productive of the season. Goals from Robert McGarry and Gary Grumoli gave the Pupils a share of the points against Duncanrigg on Saturday. On Sunday an injury striken side travelled to Paisley to take on Carlton YMCA, a game in which the Pupils claimed all three points. A hat-trick from Gary Grumoli and a second goal in two games from Robert McGarry ensured a good ending to a very difficult season.

There is now one match remaining, an away fixture against Eaglesham next Saturday 22nd May.

Good news from the appeal hearing on Tuesday where the decision to deduct Campbeltown Boys AFC 12 points for administrative errors was upheld and thrown out.

The Boys will now enjoy another season in Premier Division Two.
