Campbeltown Boys beat Mid Argyll rivals Lochgilphead Red Star at the Ropework Park on Thursday evening 1-0. A very young Boys side featuring only 2 players above the age of 22 won the game with a stunning goal from young David Johnston.
Last Saturday Campbeltown Pupils played host to Kintyre rivals Tarbert running our comfortable 3-1 winners. Photos to follow.
Here is the match report from the Pupils website
Two goals in the first five minutes effectively finished the game before it had a chance to get going. A penalty was awarded for hand ball in the 2nd minute of the game, an opportunity for Paul Grumoli to send the Tarbert goalkeeper the wrong way to open the scoring.
Brother Gary Grumoli netted the second in the fifth minute as Tarbert's dream of keeping things tight disolved before they had even settled into the game.
Things could have been much worse for the Loch Fyne side; however, the Pupils were in a lenient mood in front of goal, lack of composure leading to a series of missed chances.
Sticking to their task, Tarbert eventually had some attacking joy when they scored against the run of play. A fine cross to the front post was headed into the bottom corner by the incoming forward, a reminder to the Pupils that the game was far from over.
The second period was almost one-way traffic, and it was unbelievable that the home side did not take the opportunity to add a few more goals. A third goal in the 65th minute finished the game as a contest, another Gary Grumoli strike doing the damage as the Pupils claimed victory.
A very good workout for both sides, with Tarbert obviously further behind in their pre-season preparations. The Pupils were quicker to the ball in all departments, a game in which certain individuals excelled.
Outstanding performance of the day came from Paul Grumoli, back to peak fitness, he was a revelation in the role of sweeper. Darren McGilviray had a fine game in the middle of the park, as had Keith Mitchell his midfield team mate.
There were no failures, but shooting practise is recommended as the home side passed the oppertunity to add a few more goals. The Pupils sharpness to the fifty-fifty ball was the most noticable point of the afternoon, although they unfortunately picked up a number of injuries that could effect team selection for the forthcoming match against the national team tomorrow Saturday 25th July.
