Pupils beat Oban Saints with video of winning goal.

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Fri May 22, 2009 1:04 am

Good result for the Pupils which should give the young Campbeltown side some confidence to take into their remaining fixtures of the season.

Match report from the Campbeltown Pupils AFC website and video courtesy of Chas - heard the video was on YouTube from some fishermen out the backs water tonight! Honestly!

Campbeltown Pupils 3 Oban Saints 2

Two goals from Gary Grumoli and one from his brother Sean was enough to clinch this hard-fought derby match at Kintyre Park on Wednesday 20th May.

The Pupils scored first when a short passback exposed the visiting goalkeeper, Gray Grumoli reaching the ball first to prod it beyond the Saints shot stopper.

At this point, Oban Saints were on the rack and, a deliberate passback gave the Pupils a further oppertunity from the resultant free-kick. Craig Colville unleashed one of his specials, only to see the Oban goalkeeper bring off a marvellous save.

Midway through the first-half, a volley from Mark Barret shook the posts their foundations, the striker's parting shot hitting the inside of the far upright before defecting to safety.

Saints at last found their feet after a hard fought introduction, and, they reduced the leeway when a long ball was misjudged by the home defence. The visiting striker found himself free behind the home defence, racing clear, he kept his cool to draw the goalkeeper before sliding the ball under his diving body.

A ball across the face of the Pupils box almost brought another goal for Saints, a first time strike being palmed over the top by a confident Neil McKay in the home goal.

The match was proving an open affair, with both teams prepared to go forward. Pupils moved into the lead whe[/youtube]n a sweetly struck corner gave Sean Grumoli the chance to steer a fine header into the net.

Half-time Pupils 2 Saints 1.

The second-half was an exciting affair, as both teams refused to accept anything short of a full victory - something that is now expected of these two great rivals.

With seven minutes remaining, Saints broke through a resolute home defence, their tall left sided striker driving the ball at an angle beyond McKay for the equaliser.

Straight from the kick-off, the home side regained the lead. A perfect through-ball found Alan Sinclair on the run, his pace taking him past the last defender. An inch perfect cross found Gary Grumoli, who turned the ball over the advancing goalkeeper into the roof of the net for the winner.

Both teams should be congratulated for serving up a typically hard-fought derby match, ninety minutes of non-stop effort, with the addition of a good level of skill.
