No games yet again involving any of the Kintyre teams last weekend (14th February). Campbeltown Pupils are at home in league action while the Boys are also at home in the Jimmy Marshall cup. Tarbert are away to Kings Park Rangers B.

Congratulations to Oban Saints who reached the last 16 of the Scottish Cup on Saturday with a home 2-1 win over Carrick - they now face another home tie to Bellshill Derby on the 7th March to reach the last 8. Good luck. I wonder what is the furthest an Argyll team has reached in the Scottish Cup :?:

Tarbert's goals were scored by Coco (a cracking free-kick). And two from the evergreen Duncan "TT" MacDougall. TT scored the winner in injury time. To be honest we were pretty poor but delighted to get the points and cling on to a chance of finishing top.

Away to top of the table Carlton YM this saturday, should be a cracker.

Good luck to the Pupils and Boys this weekend, hopefully they will bounce back and get a result.

Results from the weekend and fixtures for this Saturday are at the bottom.

From the Pupils Website

Postal Comeback Secures Victory
Campbeltown Pupils 1 Postal United 2

A second half fightback by Postal United secured them a crucial victory in a game that had a draw written all over it.
The Pupils secured the lead thanks to a family affair, Sean Grumoli's header at the far post striking the underside of the bar, the resultant rebound turned home from close range by brother Gary. Unfortunately, the home side were unable to turn the screw, only showing their real potential in the latter part of a match that was blessed with two outstanding saves from the Postal goalkeeper.

Things started brightly for the home side, with young stand-in keeper Lorne Robertson virtually untested in the first forty-five minutes. However, with a strong westerly wind keeping most of the play in the visitors half of the park, the Pupils were unable to capitalise on their territorial advantage.

In the first half the Pupils passing was wayward, a lack of a constructive play that would eventually come back to haunt them. The home side failed to build any momentum on the heavy Kintyre Park surface, something, on reflection they will regret.

A slack passback in the opening minutes of the second-half resulted in a free-kick on the edge of the box, goalkeeper Robertson unable to do anything else other than gather the ball. A short pass wide of the wall created the angle for a wonderful strike, the ball finding the top right hand corner of the net to bring Postal level.

Ironically, this setback spurred the Pupils on, the final quarter of the match being their best spell of a tense match. The home side now had the upper hand and, looked the more likely to orchestrate an important victory. The Postal goalkeeper obviously had another agenda, making two outstanding saves in the space of minutes to keep his side in the match.

The first from a wonderful free-kick by Darren MaGillveray, the keeper stretching full length to turn a goalbound shot over the top - definately a candidate for save of the season!

A through pass produced his second outstanding stop in the matter of minutes, the visiting goalkeeper turning a certain goal to safety by blocking the ball with his prostrate body.

These saves were the turning point in an evenly fought match, the Pupils running out of luck when a counter-attack produced a crucial winner for the visitors. A deep cross to the far post found the unmarked striker in acres of space, his firm header flying into the net for the crucial winning goal.

Pupils mounted a last ditch seige on the visitors goal; however, these efforts failed to produce a reward. The day was lost for a young Pupils side, a group who are learning the hard way, although their day will come in the not to distant future.

Another great result for Tarbert at the weekend - well done lads.

Another disappointing day for both Campbeltown teams who both lost away in the league. Both the Pupils and Boys are now rooted to the bottom of their respective leagues with only 1 win in 20 games being recorded.

Tarbert meanwhile continued their excellent league form with a 6-1 away win to Duncanrig FPs (B) and were boosted by news that their Mid Argyll rivals Lochgilphead Red Star did their promotion hopes a huge favour with a 3-1 hom win against Div 1 leaders Carlton YM (B).

Tarbert now sit 1 point behind Carlton with 4 games to play. With three of these at home the "Dookers" are in with a massive shout of making it to the promotion play off.

Mixed results for the two Campbeltown sides as the Pupils went down 3-0 to Duncanrig (East Kilbride) at Kintyre Park while Campbeltown Boys won 2-1 against Clydebank College on the Meadows in a relegation battle. An important win for the Boys that now sees them leapfrog Clydebank College from bottom.

Perhaps not the result the Tarbert were wanting who are going well in Division 1. If Tarbert win their last 3 games they will win the league. The team who wins the 1st Division will only get a play off against the bottom team in Premier Two if they meet the SAFL criteria. And we all know that the SAFL will never allow another Argyll team into the Premier Divisions unless I suspect it was at the hands of another Argyll team - ie the Boys. Will be interesting to see how it pans out...

Tarbert lost 3-2 to Aikenhead Thistle B in the quarters of the coronation cup. We made a few changes for this game to keep things fresh but unfortunately lost our keeper to injury in the warm-up. It was a good cup tie and we missed a couple of good chances towards the end to force it to penalties but it wasnt to be.

Well done to the Boys on their victory yesterday. Personally, i want to see ALL the argyll teams winning, IF we win our games and a play-off i would be stunned if we were refused entry to the premier section!

Hope to see ALL the Kintyre teams having a good finish to the season. :D :D

Exciting game at Kintyre Park which saw the Pupils lead to then be trailing 3-1 to fight back to 3-3. All in the second half and an excellent game flowing from one end to another on an excellent day for play.

Tarbert now edge close to winning the 1st Division with a 3-2 win over Sporto and news filtering through from Dumbarton that the Rock beat Carlton 4-2 means that one win from either of their last two games will see the Kintyre side take the title! With Tarbert away to Rosehill Star on the 9th followed by the last game of the season at home to bottom side Shawlands the Dookers must really fancy their chances to finish off a fantastic season. Good luck to all involved. 8)

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Mon May 11, 2009 9:18 pm

Unfortunately, due to the weather none of the Kintyre teams played at the weekend. Interesting to note Oban were able to play as they moved on to their 3G pitch. Amazingly due to Oban's good run in the Scottish Cup they face a fixture pile up with play 5 games in 9 days!!! Including a visit to Campbeltown Pupils on Wednesday 20th May.

Good luck to Tarbert this weekend.

Should have posted last week's results. Pupils went down by the odd goal, while both the Boys and Tarbert won with Tarbert wining the SAFL First Division - see photos etc on separate thread.

16th May 2009
Premier Kilpatrick FC 2 - 1 Campbeltown Pupils G.Kelso
Premier 2 Campbeltown Boys 3 - 1 Rolls Royce EK A.Marshall
Division 1 Tarbert 2 - 1 Shawlands FP (B) P.McCallum

Pupils beat Argyll rivals 3-2 in a cracking game on Wednesday night

20th May 2009
Premier Campbeltown Pupils 3 - 2 Oban Saints P.McCallum

Yesterday saw the Pupils go down to another narrow defeat and condem the Campbeltown side to the SAFL PRemier 1st Division next year. With a young side and time on their hands I am sure the Pupils will bounce back. The Boys made it 3 wins on the row and ensured their position in the SAFL Premier Division 2. Another young side and lets hope they can build on this for next year. Tarbert finished their fine season off with a 3-2 away win to Rosehill and will now play Clydebank in the play off for a position in the SAFL PRemier Divsion 2. Best of luck to the Dookers!

23rd May 2009
Premier Pollok AFC 2 - 1 Campbeltown Pupils M.Auld
Premier 2 Campbeltown Boys 3 - 1 Rutherglen J.Scott
Division 1 Rosehill Star 2 - 3 Tarbert D.Flanigan

This weekend sees the Pupils end their season at home with a double header playing on Saturday and SUnday. Sunday's tie should be more interesting given Pollock are challenging for the title.

30th May 2009
Premier Campbeltown Pupils v Inverclyde AFC 14:00 D.Flanigan

31st May 2009
Premier Campbeltown Pupils v Pollok AFC 14:00 D.Murray

You missed the Boys' fixture for this coming Saturday, going for four in a row at home to Kilbowie Union!
Can you blame the man for going out of his mind temporarily?

Sorry Ranald, appologies, going too fast for my own liking. 8)

The SAFL season came to an end at the weekend with Campbeltown Pupils playing on both Saturday and Sunday at home. On Saturday the local side went down by the odd goal 3-2 to Inverclyde in a match which the Pupils will be disappointed to have lost having led 2-0. A 1-0 win on Sunday against title chasing Pollock will give the young Pupils confidence for next season. (a copy of the match report can be seen below)

Campbeltown Boys made it 4 games undefeated in a tense affair which ended 4-4 against Kilbowie Union on Kinloch Park. On a high after three straight wins the Boys will also be disappointed to have lost this game having led 3-0 however, a last minute penalty secured from young John McCallum secured a point for the home side.

So both Campbeltown sides end the season with positives added to the hope that Tarbert will join the Premier set-up next season (see separate thread).

On a sad note to end the season, it was great sadness I read today of the death of the SAFL treasurer Andy Wilson who visited Kintyre a number of times over the years with his involvement in the amateur game and who would no doubt have been in Campbeltown this coming Saturday for the Select game. A lovely wee chap who always had time to speak about the game and will be sadly missed. Condolences to Andy's family.

Match report from the Pupils game on Sunday from the Pupils' website at http://www.campbeltownpupilsafc.amateur ... ews_id=122 Interesting to note big Double A is now playing for the Pupils! 8) :D

Late goal ends Pollock's championship bid.
Campbeltown Pupils 1 Pollock 0

A late goal from Daren McGillivray was enough to end Pollock's championship dreams. Just when everyone was settling for a draw, a long ball over the top was instantly controlled by the Pupils midfield player, who ran on to draw the keeper, before slamming the ball into the net.

This was a tense match, with neither team playing at its best. On a day of searing heat, the Pupils edged the first half exchanges and, could have taken the lead on a number of occasions.

As the game progressed, Pollock did come into the match as an attacking force, playing possesion football for almost the first time in the game. For their part, the Pupils back four stood firm as the pressure began to build, the championship ambitions of the visitors driving them forward in search of a crucial goal.

Nevertheless, the home side always looked dangerous in attack, the free running Wylie and Sinclair causing alarm every time they stepped forward. Paul McWhirter and Gary Grumoli worked tirelessly throughout, and should be commended for hunting down many a lost cause.

However, in the end the day belonged to the Pupils defence who refused to give an inch throughout the ninety minutes. Norman Thompson, Craig Colville, Sean Grumoli and Andrew Armour were almost an unmovable force, ably backed by the safe hands of Neil McKay in the home goal.

Another stout-hearted effort came from Paul Grumoli and Grant Grant in the boiler house, always scrapping for an advantage on what was the warmest day of the season.

This was a fine end to what was a poor season for the home favourites, however, the team continues to grow and will surely fare better in future campaigns.
