Record turnout for beach rugby

Postby Tom B » Mon Jun 16, 2008 11:42 pm

From the Press & Journal .....this sounds like a good event, with Kintyre represented.

"A RECORD 28 rugby teams from across Scotland were on Islay at the weekend for a unique event in the rugby calendar – the Lagavulin Beach Rugby tournament.

Former Scotland player Rob Wainwright was one of a number of former internationals, including Gregor Townsend, Rory Kerr, Stevie Scott and Ian MacLachlan, who joined the teams.

The five-a-side full-contact tournament took place on Islay’s White Hart Beach, at Port Ellen.

Sponsored by the Lagavulin distillery for the third year running, the event, which was over-subscribed this year, has steadily grown in popularity since the tournament was first played eight years ago.

A crowd of nearly 500 watched in perfect playing conditions on Saturday as the Lagavulin Invitation men’s team took the trophy following their 4-1 victory over Loch Lomond in the final.

Watsonsians took the ladies trophy, beating Edinburgh University 3-1.

This full-contact beach rugby event, accompanied by the music of Islay’s pipe band, is unique in Scottish rugby.

VisitScotland’s local regional director, Scott Armstrong, said the Lagavulin Beach Rugby tournament was a good opportunity to highlight in a unique way what Islay has to offer.

Men’s teams this year were from the Army, Navy, Ulster, Border Reivers, Melrose, Cartha, Strathendrick, Cowal, Hillhead, Hillhead Select, Moffat, Howe (Fife), Cambuslang, Falkirk, Oban, Mid Argyll and Kintyre.

Two Islay teams and four Islay distillery teams also took part.

The women’s teams came from Hillhead, GHA, Oban, Edinburgh University, Newcastle, Watsonians and Islay."

Ironically as I cleared a bit of beach at the Caravan a few weeks ago I though why doesn't Kintyre have a beach football competition?

Plenty of beaches to choose from and first year could be simple to see how things go.

Think it is important nowadays to aim at something different.

Followed by a bbq and beers of course. 8)
