Avoiding VAT

Postby Sport » Fri Aug 24, 2007 11:03 pm

Does anyone know how the Sports Council can avoid paying VAT? Do we have to become VAT registered and if so how do we do this or do we become a charity - and if so how do we do this?

Sorry, but hoping someone out there from the bigger member clubs can help us!

Avoiding VAT on the likes of our mini bus project is the difference between ordering one very soon and having to raise thousands more!

Also, does anyone know if organisations can claim back fuel etc?

There are various exemptions for VAT but I think they all require you to be registered for VAT. Bear in mind also that it's a two-way thing. Whilst you can claim back VAT you also have to charge it against services you provide, such as if there is a charge for groups hiring the minibus.

Best advice is to give HM Customs and Excise a ring and ask them. My businesses are VAT registered and I've always found them to be helpful with any queries I've had.

This is probably your best bet for assistance. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/casc/index.htm

I dealt with them 2 years ago and found them to be very helpful. The Scottish Sports Council should also be able to advise you.
