League Challenge Up And Running

SAFL Premier Two

Campbeltown Pupils 4 Rutherglen 1

The Fadyen sponsored Campbeltown Pupils got their league challenge of the best possible start with three valuable points at Kintyre Park last Saturday. A dominant second half put the game beyond doubt after a less than convincing opening forty-five minutes.

The young home side continue to improve, but must learn to concentrate when not in possession of the ball. As usual, Paul Grumoli showed his appetite for the game when he latched onto a free kick to head firmly into the net in the seventeenth minute of the match. Rutherglen were causing problems on the break, and were far from down and out as they continued to threaten the home defence. The visitors drew level when a fine pass sent their centre forward through on goal, his parting shot struck with venom to equalise as half time approached.

There was far more energy about the home side’s play in the second half, something that has been a feature of recent games. The movement and distribution of the ball was much quicker, a tempo Rutherglen were unable to match. A slack pass-back allowed G Grant to latch onto the ball, the Pupils striker toe-poking the ball beyond the stranded goalkeeper to walk the ball into the net on the hour.

The pace of G Croll was causing the visitors all sorts of bother, and, after forcing a corner on the right, the ball was driven home from close range by centre half Sorlay McKinven to extend the home side’s lead. Substitute Dougie Guy completed the scoring when he steered the ball home from a G Croll cut-back.

In recent weeks the home side have played there way into the match after a sluggish start. The management will look for a higher tempo throughout the ninety minutes as the home side post their challenge for promotion.

Campbeltown Pupils are at home to unbeaten newcomers Hillington AFC at Kintyre Park tomorrow Saturday 1st September.

Really need to try and get these on here on a weekly basis!

Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division 2

Campbeltown Pupils 2 v 1 Clydebank College

The Pupils grabbed all three points in this tough league match against the men from West Dunbartonshire after coming from behind.

The home side found themselves 1-0 down in the first five minutes but quickly calmed themselves to enjoy the majority of play against a very physical Clydebank side. The Pupils drew level after 30 minutes when Keith Mitchell sent a inch perfect cross from the left in to the box to be met by Gary Grumoli in the air as the young striker pounced to out leap the visitor's defence and send a looping jeader over the Bankies keeper.

Although the Pupils enjoyed the lion's share of the game they couldn't put their chances away for the remainder of the half or indeed the start of the half. Tempers started to flair in the match as the tackles flew in and after a foul on the Pupils McKinven players got involved and none more than the Clydebank goalkeeper who seemed to want to be involved in everything all day and came rushing off his line to dispute the decision with the referee, the Pupils players and about anyone without a CLydebank top on! However, it was to prove a costly mistake as he ran back to his goal the quick thinking left back, Keith Gillespie, sent another perfect strike from just short of the half way line over the dispairing keeper and into the net much to the delight of the home team and support. If ever there was a lesson about not getting involved in anything this was it as the home side held out to gain a valuable three points in their push for promotion.

Team - Lamont, Mitchell, McCallum, McKinven, Robertson, Lang, Crossan, Grumoli, McFadyen, Grant and Grumoli

This Saturday the Pupils will be at home in the third round of the national amateur cup. With stormy weather forecast it can only be assumed it will be on the All Weather Pitch.

Scottish Cup 3rd Round

Campbeltown Pupils 1 Rossvale 0

The McFadyen sponsored Campbeltown Pupils progressed to round four of the national cup with a win over resolute Bishopbriggs outfit Rossvale, a team who made it extremely difficult for the Kintyre side in an entertaining ninety minutes of cup football at Kinloch Park.

It is a difficult game to describe, as both teams’ served up an enthralling cup-tie in which either side could have won in the closing quarter of an hour, but in truth, was a day of missed chances for the home side. Campbeltown’s new all-weather surface is a test of skill and character, a great lever as players struggle to cope with the intricacies of the artificial surface. Simple ball to feet should be the war cry, but too many try to run in possession or play a chasing ball, a ploy only Usain Bolt would relish.

In the end, the home defence could look back on a ‘clean sheet,’ and a good shift by sweeper G Grant has to be acknowledged as the corner-stone of solid performance by the back four. There were good performances throughout the team, and brothers Grumoli were instrumental as usual in the final reckoning. However, as Paul carved through the opposition defence mid-way through the first half, a simple cut-back to Gary would have been the better option than a shot at goal. There was also a glaring miss or two in front of goal, but it is better to take the positive as chances were being created.

A thunderous drive from Gary Grumoli struck the post in the closing quarter, but the breakthrough was only delayed. The visitors were guilty of overplaying the ball across the back four, and when dispossessed they conceded the winner when Gary Grumoli rifled the ball into the bottom corner.

It is good to see the younger players making their mark, and both McFadyen brothers, Stuart Crossan and Martin McCallum were all impressive at various stages of the match. Gregor Croll also put in a good shift when coming on as substitute. In the end, the home side could look back on a solid defensive performance, a game they never looked like losing, but one that could have been lost for the want of killing off the tie when the opportunity was available.

Tomorrow, Saturday 17th November, the Pupils travel to Glencastle Sparta for an important league fixture.

Campbeltown Pupils returned to league action today against Argyll rivals, Dunoon AFC, in the Premier Two Division clash. The men from the Wee Toon will return to the Campbeltown tonight top of the league and remain beaten after a gutsy performance against the men from Cowal. Paul Grmoli gave the Pupils a 1-0 lead at half time with Dunoon responding in the second half to make it 1-1 and a share of the points. Attached link shows the league table after the scores today

And just to show we care about football outside of Campbeltown it was a good day all round for football in Kintyre as Tarbert AFC beat Millbeg at home 2-1 in the SAFL Division One clash with a brace from Kyle Doull. Meanwhile Carradale won 3-1 away to Clydebank Co at John Brown playing field in West Dunbartonshire in their Scottish Amateur Welfare League match with goals from Keith Mathieson, Neil Russel and Ranald Rixson.

Great result for Campbeltown Pupils today as they romped to an impressive 4-0 win against Argyll rivals Dunoon AFC. Another great result for the Pupils following their 5-1 win away to Clydebank last week - see

Great result for Campbeltown Pupils today as they won 3-0 away to Carlton. After a goalless first half in Paisley the Pupils stepped up a gear to secure all three points with goals from Robin Barr and two from John McCallum (that's five in two games for the big man!). The Campbeltown side remain top of the league with five games to go - three away and two at home - an exciting finale to the season following the last few years of disappointment. All the best!

Further good news for the Pupils as Centre go down 4-2 to Hillington today meaning the Campbeltown side have opened up a 9 point gap at the top of the table. Rutherglen do however, have three games in hand but the Pupils have the points on the board! The Pupils have now scored 19 goals in their last 4 games with 1 against.
