Local football coaches learn for the future (with photos)

Nine football coaches attained their Level 1 Early Touches certificate last weekend when Argyll & Bute Council’s Football Development Officer, Martin Rae, visited Campbeltown to host the course on the Meadows Playing Fields.

Campbeltown and District Juvenile Football Association’s Willie Renton joined the local coaches, some of whom have recently started coaching and others who will hopefully join and support football in Campbeltown and Kintyre.

The six hour session was aimed at those who work with children of primary school aged 5 – 11 year olds and the course will assist coaches to develop their coaching technique, focus on skill development and explore the best age specific activities for developing young players. There also was an emphasis on skill development and fun in a variety of individual and group activities that those present thoroughly enjoyed – especially when they had to be the 7 and 8 year olds!

The course was organised by the new Campbeltown and District Community Football Club who have recently put together a coaching framework for courses to be held in Campbeltown and are in discussion with Martin to run the Level 1 Developing Youth Players aimed at those coaching 12 to 18 years old soon - details to follow shortly.

The Community Club’s Chairman, Alex McKinven, said “After a long time at discussion level, Campbeltown football has at last moved under the umbrella of a common cause, a project run by an amalgam of the town's football groups under Campbeltown & District Community Football Club. Our aims are to encourage participation from like-minded individuals, improve coaching skills to the highest level possible and to use this knowledge to improve the skills level of our young people and the standard of football in our community.”
