Pupils win through to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup

Postby Kintyre Forum News » Thu Jan 19, 2012 10:27 pm

Scottish Amateur Cup 3rd Round.

Campbeltown Pupils 2 Blantyre Celtic 1.

The McFadyen sponsored Campbeltown Pupils deservedly reached the fourth round of the Scottish Cup after in a competitive ninety minutes at Kintyre Park. Probably the youngest squad ever to represent the club turned up trumps when the going got tough. The home side started brightly and closed down the opposition at ever opportunity, with striker Gregor McFadyen going close as early as the fifth minute with a shot that flew wide of the post. The home side looked in the mood during the early exchanges, a warning to Blantyre of what was to come.

Missing key players in defence, the Pupils rearguard was hardly turned during the whole ninety minutes and can be rightly proud of their day’s work. A long through ball to Gary Grumoli broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, the home side’s top scorer weaving one way then the other, before driving the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

The Pupils had the ball in the net minutes later when Gregor McFadyen fired home from close-range after a Ryan Gilchrist headed cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Blantyre started strongly in the second-half, pinning the home back in determined fashion with good possession football; however, the home side still managed to hit the outside of the post on the counter. The visitors were unlucky when a fine shot struck the bar; however, the equaliser was only delayed. A free kick from thirty yards was saved by Craig Colville at his left hand post; the goalkeeper having the cruellest of luck when the ball squirmed from his grasp and crossed the line.

As the game swung one way, then the other, the home side fought back in determined fashion to score a fine second goal. A perfectly weighted cross by John McCallum found the onrushing Ryan Gilchrist, the midfielder’s parting header flying past the rooted goalkeeper to find the net. There was no way back for Blantyre, and, the Pupils deservedly marched into the fourth round of the competition, on the day, a victory for teamwork on a very heavy surface.

Pupils will play Denniston in the fourth round of the competition tomorrow Saturday 21st January at Kintyre Park with a 2pm kick-off.
