Ten Man Pupils Secure Away Win
SAFL Premier Division Two
Dunoon 1 Campbeltown Pupils 2
The McFadyen sponsored Campbeltown Pupils stay top of the league after a dramatic away win against Argyll rivals Dunoon. Still undefeated after eight fixtures, if there ever was a day when things should have gone haywire this was it. Already reeling from a number of late call-offs, to make matters worse the Kintyre side had to endure the self-inflicted wound of having stalwart G Grant dismissed for hand-ball.
Playing for the second time this season on an artificial surface, the young Pupils side can be rightly proud of coming back from the dead to grab victory. The home side were more physical in their approach, a tactic which paid dividends when they grabbed the lead in the 25th minute of the match. With the visitor's defence appealing for offside, a cross to the incoming forward was heading for the net before it was handled on the line by Grant Grant. The resultant penalty was dispatched to give Dunoon the lead, a disastrous period in which the visitors were also reduced to ten men.
The game reached half-time without further scoring, a period in which the visitors gained self-belief for what was to come. Playing with confidence, the Pupils grabbed the equaliser in the 70 minute after a fine cross to the back post was steered home via the head of Ryan Gilchrist. Ten minutes later the Kintyre side went ahead, a fine move setting Andrew Henderson one on one with the home goalkeeper. Keeping his cool, the Pupils forward drew the last line of defence before clipping the ball into the corner of the net for the winner.
The Pupils finished much the stronger of the two sides, a fine team effort when considering they had played most of the match with ten men.
