Grogport - Smugglers Cave, any info?

Postby ChrisA » Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:41 am

Stayed in Grogport recently, and on a day when Grogport hill was totally impassable, I decided to go off down the rocky coast for a walk/climb.

Our hosts, had told me about a cave near the coastline called 'Smugglers cave' (yeah, I know that most of em are) and that in the early 1900's a pretty large family used to live in the cave. It was apparently a bit secluded, hidden by bushes and facing away from the shore - hence being perfect for smugglers!

Anyway, I went off to find it, and after some time I got there. Stupidly, I'd forgotten to take a torch so I couldnt look too deep into the cave, but it did look pretty small to be honest, can't imagine anyone living it it but, apparently so.

Anyone have any further info on this at all? I found the story fascinating.

Hi Chris

Sorry I can't help with any info about the cave as this is the first time that I have heard of it. However, I would like to go and take a look at it for myself, do you have a grid reference for it?

Thanks Johnny. It also shows the cave on the modern OS 1:25000 map too.

We may have to investigate this cave in an official capacity ;)
