The Changing Face of Campbeltown

I could rhyme off a great list of Campbeltown buildings that have disappeared during my lifetime, and as buildings are obviously a very important part of the fabric of a community, and part of our heritage, I ask what the feelings are of forum members on the disappearance of local buildings. Buildings are associated with our experiences and can have an element of sentiment and memories associated with them.

I will start the ball rolling with three:

Lochend Church

Millknowe School

Rex Cinema

Anybody care to add to this list?

A couple I would like to see photos of are Craigie Place and the Cowdenknowes(sp). I dont remember them but they crop up a lot in the family tree and in old local books.

The other tenement building in that area was Gayfield Place. Some of my classmates in Dalintober School lived there and I spent quite a bit of time there. :D

I can only ever remember Cowdeknowes as being derelict, but I do remember it being demolished. It was in the early 1960s and I was in Dalintober School at the time, and we were aware that they were going to take it down. It was perched at the top of the hill opposite Glentorran Place, and I think it was brought down in one. I don't know what way it was done, or if explosives were used, but it must have been about 10 0' clock at night we heard the clatter in our house in Albyn Avenue. Next day when going to school it was just a pile of rubble.

It would certainly be interesting to see old photos of these tenement blocks.

Has anyone got any photos of the Gas Works? I can vaguely remember something tall and red brick being where the Jaeger factory used to be. I used to stay on Davaar Avenue in the summer and can remember seeing something there. (I think!)

There must be loads of photos of these long gone buildings that people have in their private collections. Would love to see some posted up on here if possible.

Does anyone remember the Cooperative Hall at the top of Broom Brae (corner with High Street).

The Albert Halls in Kinloch Road.

The Army huts and garage on Ralston Road between Meadows Avenue and where Meadowpark now is (also the Boys' Brigade hut next to them).

The furniture shop at the Rieclachan was Paterson's, not the Co-op, by the way.

Ofcourse I do,and behind Paterson's was the A.T.C. Hall.

Used to have Christmas parties as a child in The Albert Hall.

There's a photo of the Gasworks on the Historic Kintyre site. It was about 150 yds from our house in Albyn Avenue, so it was a very meaningful building for me.

Millknowe School was on the site between The Roading, Glengyle Road, and Glebe Street. The site now occupied by the gas depot.

Thanks for that - found it:

It's strange seeing that as I only have blurry memories of that from years ago (1970's?) I probably got mixed up about where it was, but that's definately it. :)
