I recall a tearoom in Longrow up near the church. It had large windows. It was where we went when we came to the town for our weekly visit and always had our meal there. Was it round about Cathie Thompson's? Not sure who owned it though!!

Had a look through Freddie Gillies's book "In Campbeltown Once More" and it mentions a Tearoom just before the church. The tearoom was dimantled to make room for the church entrance to be widened. The name of the tearoom was Clarks?

I don't recall the name but I remember the place appeared to be so clean it sparkled and the tables were covered in tablecloths.

I only have a vague recollection of this tearoom, and was never in it. I remember the buildings being demolished at the entrance to the church. Was the tearoom not upstairs?

Am I that old that nobody else can recall that particular tearoom? I am still a few decades away from getting my telegram from the Queen.

If it is the Central Tearoom, I remember it well, but don't go far enough back to remember it as Mrs. Lavery's. When I knew it, the proprietor was Netta McLachlan. I used to go in there quite a lot, as Netta is my aunt. When she gave up the tearoom, she had Morton's shop in George Street for a good number of years before retiring in 1980.

At the Central Tearoom I can recall Mrs Mary MacCallum working there, she lived next door to my grandparents in Ralston Road.
My mother worked in Mortons for Mrs McLachlan until her and her husband Alex retired.
I remember another lady who worked there, Mrs Amy, she was a really kind person was good to all the chidren who came into the shop.

It is quite likely that Mrs Lavery owned The Central Tearoom, but according to my childhood memories we always had our dinner in Mrs Lavery's--------that was in the late forties.

In the fifties quite a few of us used to go to the tearoom beside Cook's to have our "dinner" instead of at the school. It cost 1s 6d and I got 6d to spend usually in Cathy Thomson's.

That`s nothing, I remember when TV cabinets were all in wood.
I also remember taking a ferry across the Firth of Forth, in 1956.

This has got me thinking of the way things were...

I can just about remember the Mayfair Cafe at the corner of Main Street and Kirk Street. When did it close? Must have been 1976 or 77. And, of course, there was also the Copper Kettle on Hall Street.

And there was a sweet shop on Longrow South between the Bank of Scotland and the Kintyre Bar... which is now occupied by the bank.

And while I'm at it, didn't the Co-op have an electrical shop just off Burnside Square, just opposite Numero Dix? Or is my memory really playing up?

And who remembers where the Courier had its office after it was sold by Archie Hogarth and moved out of the - er - Courier Office. Just next to the Corner Shop.
