wonder about the Wee Toon thing............not doubting or disagreeing with Gizmo or Milldam but a few long standing C/town people and old timers have said to me that the WT tag was recent.........I don't know.

I agree with the old timers. When we left the town in 69,neither Catherine or myself had ever heard the town being called "the wee toon".

I don't know when (or from where) the "Wee Toon" thing came about either.

( If it's supposed to be a nickname, then it isn't in keeping with Campbeltown-esque.
Nicknames from these parts are usually droll, nonsensical, random or often based on nothing contained in any English dictionary. )

Personally, I don't like it, never did ... and hence I never use it... EVER.

If anyone ever asks, "I'm from Campbeltown" ... the end.

CN is the port identification letters for Campbeltown, So, for fishing vessel registry, it would have the port letters, then a unique number. Some numbers were associated with families. Ours had CN45 on 2 boats.

Other ports in the area are:- TT-Tarbert, BA - Ayr (Ballantrae), OB - Oban.

In the Clyde, fishermen would run a mile from an connortation of "!3", but Orkney fishermen want a "13" number. I knew of several K (Kirkwall) boats like this, some of them were quite creative.
OOH did they knock down McCaigs folly.....

Bobbie - on the front of the boat, the fore, it would have CN - then the number - then usually, the name of the boat gilded on both sides of the front for identification. Usually, the fishermen can ID them by sight, but for others or for boats not from the local waters, or if one of our boats wandered to far away or, for God's sake were put asunder, it was for identification purposes, should the need arise!
