Nearly right! It was N L Mc Millan. It stocked all sorts of clothing. I remember the drawers of gloves and socks and stockings and getting measured for skirts. It was a big shop with nice staff. :o

Although N L McMillans' was in Longrow, where the Toy Box was. :?

I remember when I used to work in the projection room of the Rex.

That is why, when this morning, I saw this painting hanging on the wall in my Doctor's surgery I asked if it was for sale.Needless to say it is now hanging on my wall at home.

Great painting!! You must be delighted with it :D
What's the artists name?

I notice the old black Nissan huts that I think housed fisherman's stores and nets at one time are there?

Bill

You are very lucky indeed - only in Corby could you go into your GP and find a 'for sale' picture of the town

I bet you are chuffed to bits with that - well done - I like the look of it too - so you can let us know the artist and maybe get her/ him some more business.

History

When did the huts come down? I seem to have a hazy memory of them, or huts like them perhaps in a different location - there is a familiarity about them anyway..

That's excellent Bill. Looks a cracking painting. Where did the doctor get it from? (is there a Campbeltown connection?)

The artist is Alastair Cochrane.

The fishing boat is CN 36.

I could have left it at it's original size to let you see the detail, but I did'nt want my nuckles rapped as in previous posts.

I wonder if that is the same A Cochrane that left Campbeltown when he was about 16 and went to Corby with his family?

Lovely picture. Beautiful reflections. The detail must be amazing in the full-size picture.
It would certainly bring a tear to the eye of an ex-pat!

A while ago I wrote about having my dinner in Mrs Lavery's Tearoom in the Longrow, a few doors along from Archie Cook's shop, when We were down on a shopping trip on the bus from Carradale. Am I that old that nobody else can recall that particular tearoom? I am still a few decades away from getting my telegram from the Queen.

If it is the Central Tearoom, I remember it well, but don't go far enough back to remember it as Mrs. Lavery's. When I knew it, the proprietor was Netta McLachlan. I used to go in there quite a lot, as Netta is my aunt. When she gave up the tearoom, she had Morton's shop in George Street for a good number of years before retiring in 1980.
