Whisky Distilleries

Postby Kintyre Lad » Fri Aug 03, 2007 8:27 pm

The Whisky Industry in Campbeltown has always intrigued me - mainly due to the number of distilleries there were in the town.

However, I haven't read too much on it - does anyone have any knowledge to share? Photos etc?

The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom by Alfred Barnard is available on ScotSites eBooks. This includes what Barnard wrote about 21 distilleries that were operating in Campbeltown at the time of his visit. The actual distilleries are (in order visited) Hazelburn*; Springbank; Dalintober*; Benmore; Ardlussa; Dalaruan; Lochead; Glen Nevis*; Kinloch; Burnside; Glengyle; Lochruan*; Albyn; Scotia; Rieclachan; Glenside*; Longrow; Kintyre; Campbeltown; Argyll; Springside. * include pictures.

Distilleries

Postby SBpete » Tue Aug 07, 2007 1:50 pm

Alfred Barnards book paints a great picture of the distilleries of Scotland at that time. I can also recommend The Distilleries of Campbeltown: The Rise and fall of the whisky capital of the World by David Stirk. David worked for Cadenheads for a while and researched his book while living here, much of the info came from a collection of diaries written by a member of the Colville Family.
The whisky shop in Bolgram Street sells a little booklet called the Springbank Story. Most of this was written by Hedley Wright, a descendent of the Mitchell Family and the owner of Springbank and Glengyle distilleries

Was looking for something Bill posted and accidentally stumbled on this site of Lost Distilleries. A few of those from campbeltown are included, so thought this might interest you, Kintyre Lad.

Interesting site you posted, Bruce.

The eBooks section of that site is certainly interesting... there's certainly a lot of reading in there (if not that much about Campbeltown or Kintyre specifically!)

got my dad Scotch Missed. Lost Distilleries of Scotland by Brian Townsend. It has a full chapter on Campbeltown and gives a fab discription of the distilleries, who owned them and where they were. My dad thinks it a great book, feel free to ask him

I may have some pics of Springbank from the late 80s - shows the work that was required to get the distillery back into production. My favourite job was remove the remains of cats & rats from the malt screws O_O (not)

We got a new map of Campbeltown showing that there were 37 licensed distilleries in Campbeltown. A few of them would have moved location i.e Argyll moved in 1844 from Burnside St to Millknowe Rd, next door to Hazelburn distillery.
There are also 3, Ballegreggan, Campbeltown (1798 - 1852) and Drumore (???? - 1847) that the researcher is not sure of their exact location.

The distilleries were/are

1 - Albyn (1830 - 1927)
2 - Ardlussa (1879 - 1923)
3 - McKinnon's Argyll (1827 - 1844)
4 - Argyll (1844 - 1923)
5 - Ballegreggan (1790 - 97)
6 - Benmore (1868 - 1927)
7 - Broombrae (1833-34)
8 - Burnside (1825 - 1924)
9 - Caledonian (1823 - 1851)
10 - Campbeltown (1815 - 1924)
11 - Campbeltown (1798 - 1852)
12 - Dalaruan (1824 - 1922)
13 - Dalintober (1832 - 1925)
14 - Drumore (1834 - 1837)
15 - Drumore (???? - 1847)
16 - Glengyle ( 1872 - 1925) (2004 - still working)
17 - Glen Nevis (1877 - 1923)
18 - Glenramskill (1828 - 1852)
19 - Glen Scotia (1832 - still working)
20 - Glenside (1830 - 1926)
21 - Hazelburn (1825 - 1925)
22 - Highland (1827 - 1852)
23 - Kinloch (1823 - 1926)
24 - Kintyre (1825 - 1887)

"The Distilleries of Campbeltown"-The Rise and Fall of the Whisky Capital of the World, by David Stirk (2005) would probably be of interest.
