How many L's in Campbeltown? I have seen it spelt both ways, even on this board!

Which then begs the question...two LL in Campbell...why only one L in Campbeltown ?

Cheers. Interestingly though, when seeking confirmation on this I tried a search on this board. Both spellings came up!

I've only seen it spelled with two L's when people were referring to the places in Australia and New Zealand... or when nonlocals were speaking of the town. Don't think I've ever seen a local refer to Campbeltown in Kintyre that way. I think if they did it would have stuck out like a sore thumb. Seems there was a music group who were coming to town spelled it with two L's on their website.

and in Texas.... nothing anyone would be proud of. Would be interesting to find out if any of these towns actually had their roots in campbeltown or if they were just named after some guy named campbell.

On page 98 of "The Campbeltown Book",commissioned by The Kintyre Civic Society, there is a fisheries chart dated 1750 with Campbeltown clearly shown spelt with 2 LL's.

Fayetteville in North Carolina was previously called Campbellton because of the high number of Kintyre immigrants.

There used to be a Campbelltown near Inverness, but it's been known as Ardesier since the 70s - apparently to stop any confusion with this Campbeltown. We lived there for a wee while before we moved to the single L .
