Just got word from a reliable source that it is going to be a hotel again. Can hardly wait! Hope to be there when it re-opens.

Chris,

I meant to post - that is what you did. Instigated discussion. Just people were asking questions back. 8)

Heading for school but will get back to you on this one later. Hope you had a good visit.

I returned to Campbeltown 22 years after my last visit and one of the reasons was to hopefully return and see the hotel. I remember staying there in the late 80s and absolutely loved the building. Good to see it hasn't been levelled but it did look a bit sad in its present condition. I do hope it's re-built by the owners even if its private accomodation.

Keil Hotel was built 1938-39 and designed by the architect John Austin Laird. It is quite a sight when you see it for the first time; probably because it is the last thing you expect to see when visiting Southend. I remember seeing it as a boy on a hot balmy summers evening in the 70's and imagining a ball there with it full of people and lit chandeliers, with the sound of music drifting down to the shore!! Oh the power of a childs imagination lol!

But it is an extremely intriguing and evocative sight indeed!

Was speaking to the owner back in April, he told
me that things were still ongoing but taking longer
than anticipated due to making the building wind and
watertight was a bigger job than initially planned.
