Aircrash in 1943

Postby Malky » Mon May 08, 2006 11:25 pm

Dunc asked me to put this on the forum.

It's an article from an Australian newspaper about the crash of Wellington bomber LB137 near the Mull of Kintyre lighthouse in 1943.

The file is in .pdf format and you will need Adobe Acrobat reader installed to view it.
By the way, it's quite a large file and you may find that your browser stops responding while reading it, especially if you are on a dialup connection. In that case, I recommend right-clicking on the link and choosing Save As.. from the popup menu. Once saved to your hard drive, you can navigate to the file and double click to open.

My mother has photos showing quite big sections of the plane, I'm in them so it's not THAT long ago! I remember looking for it again about 10 years ago and all that remained was the same stuff in the article
OOH did they knock down McCaigs folly.....

Interesting story, :) . I had to smile at the scrap man being told to "Bugger off" :) .
I heard that there were quite a few crash sites on the Mull and that some thought something there upsets navigation instruments

Off hand there's 11 down there to date I'm afraid.
Lots of idea's but basically they were "lost" in poor Wx I think and got caught out.
Remember the WW2 aircraft had quite basic Nav. gear

Just as an addon I actually received a letter from a Robert Douglas in Victoria Aussie on Monday about this crash as he was at the site a couple of days later and he managed to fill in a few details.Robert was a farmer at Knockbay during the war if anyone remembers him.

The metalic content in the ground also caused these early, lowflying aircraft to crash due to their navigation systems reporting incorrect information

Compass

Postby Dunc » Thu Jul 20, 2006 8:03 pm

Well I've heard that but my compass has always worked perfectly..but then again it's German from a Ju88!! I think simply getting lost is nearer the truth.
